Review

Story
Bimbisara (Kalyanram) is a ruthless king from Trigartala Empire (5th century BCE). He is driven by ego and kills everyone who criticizes him. In an unexpected event, he gets transported to the current century during pandemic time. This travel makes him clueless and helpless, which in turn teaches humanity and nobility. Rest of the story is all about how mends himself and does good to his kingdom.

Artists Performance

Nandamuri Kalyanram is sensational in the negative role of Bimbisara. He has added some base to his voice while uttering dialogues for Bimbisara character in the first half and he is terrific. He has shown 360 degree variations in his acting as the character gives such a scope. Bimbisara unveiled the real actor in Kalyanram. Catherine Tresa looks decent as princess Ira. Samyukta Menon character is more like a character role than that of a heroine. Vivan Bhatena is okay. Prakash Raj is excellent in a short, yet a vital role. Srinivasa Reddy is very entertaining as Zubeida (designed in the lines of Chitragupta (assistant of Yama)). Cameo by Chammak Chandra is also entertaining. Tanikella Bharani is fine as a priest. Vennela Kishore is nice. Ayyappa P Sharma has become a trademark for such priest characters and he does really well. Brahmaji and Viva Harsha make their presence felt.

Technical departments

Story - screenplay - direction: Story of the film is about how a ruthless and cold-blooded king transforms himself into a fine human-being when he is thrown into another time-period. It’s a story (the arc of a bad guy turning into a good guy) that works well when delivered in a decent manner. The writer has added all necessary mass ingredients like entertainment (designing Zubeida character like Chitragupta, creating some entertainment when the king is suddenly thrown in 2020 times with people wearing masks) and sentiment (the kid sentiment works as a lifeline to the film). Debutant director Vassisht does a decent job by keeping the basics right and catering to the target audiences of masses and family crowds. Though the mass elements look a little old-fashioned at times, they have the ability to work well with masses (like VV Vinayak). The time travel aspect and portal (mirror) would have been more registered if the entire process of the mirror being transported and placed in the museum is shown in a clear manner.

Other departments: Background music by MM Keeravani is outstanding. He provides much needed impetus with his bgm and breathes life/energy into many scenes in the film. Cinematography by the veteran Chota K Naidu is very good. It’s a highly skillful job to do such a film with gigantic visual scope in a limited budget, and Chota K Naidu succeeds in it. VFX work is okay. Dialogues written by Vasudev Muneppagari are good. Production design by Kiran Kumar Manne is alright and period stuff is mostly inspired by Bahubali. Editing by Tammiraju is decent. Action choreography by Venkat and Ram Krishan is effective (especially the kidnap fight in the 2nd half). Production values by NTR Arts banner are excellent.

Analysis: Doing masala commercial films is not a sin unless they are delivered with routine backdrops. Writing of this film scores high on two points, characterisation of ruthless king and time travel. From the audience's perspective, this film scores excellently on two points, Kalyanram’s performance as Bimbisara and Keeravani’s background score. Debutant director Vassisht cleverly covered all the bases when it came to commercial aspects. Plus points of the film are Kalyanram performance, Keeravani background music and commercial elements. On the flipside, the treatment in certain scenes look old-fashioned. On the whole, Bimbisara film is a workable commercial film that entertains common moviegoers. You may watch it!
