Boss – Right mix of class n mass

- Sundeep Reddy

Nagarjuna, after enacting the role of Sri Rama’s staunch devotee in Sri Ramadasu, returns as a handsome, suave boss donning designer clothes that’d make the gals go ga ga over him again. Little wonder then why Nayanatara wouldn’t say Boss – I Love You. Another gal, who has a big crush on Nag, is Poonam Bajwa.

VN Aditya, who debuted with a lot of promise, hasn’t really established himself as a successful director there after. With alternating hits and flops – Manasantha Nuvve, Sreeram, Nenunnanu, Manasau Maata Vinadu – he is yet to carve a niche for himself. Undeterred by his success ratio, Nag and producer D Siva Prasad Reddy give him a second chance with Boss. Also, this incidentally, is the second time that Aditya and music director Kalyani Malik are working together after Manasu Maata Vinadu.

That Kalyani Malik is Keeravani’s brother is evident from the way he composes his songs. Drawing inspiration from other sources is nothing new to Indian music directors and if it comes from within the home, then should one really fret about it? After all, what are big brothers for? Aren’t younger ones supposed to be looking up to them? (I hope my brother isn’t reading this one). That aside, let’s see how Malik fares here. Remix guru Harry Anand, also composes two songs for Boss.

1. Nachhinde Chesey halfnil
This groovy song composed by Harry Anand has Chandrabose emphasizing the importance of keeping your self respect and being self sufficient in his lyrics. Though Hemachandra’s non-baritone voice may leave some folks dissatisfied especially having listened to Shankar Mahadevan sing such songs, he succeeds mainly because of an enthused rendition.

2. Edo Tamaashaga halfnil
Its Sunitha’s show all the way and Nihal is not behind either. Together they make this song appealing. Even though it has heard before beats, Kalyani Malik comes up with a catchy tune. Going by the lyrics, this one sounds like Nag trying to control an inebriated Nayana in Malaysia (with the typical Chinese/Malaysian music in the second interlude). Zarasa Jhoom Loo Main [DDLJ] anyone? Sahithi words this one.

3. Naa Kallu Vaale fullhalfnil
This breezy number with nice orchestration that’s akin to a Hindi song, I am told, is composed by Harry Anand. Tippu, Sumangaly and Smitha sing this one quite well. Chandrabose’s lyrics talking about out some petty differences in the attitude of guys and gals are decent.

4. Hello Baasu nilnil
Though Kalyani’s tune is just about average he infuses a lot of beats into this song and also peppers the song with words like ‘I’ll rock you’. The opening base beat reminds one of Raadhe Govinda [Indra]. Tippu, Gayathri sing this one and Sahithi words it.

5. Veltunna Veltunna fullfullfullfullnil
Sunitha truly excels in this pathos song. While KK sounds his usual self, Sunitha brings out all the emotions very subtly not making this song overtly dramatic. If there is anything that is dramatic about this song, then it is Chandrabose’s lyrics. Don’t get me wrong when I say that. His lyrics are good but his language is too flowery at most points. Sample this – naa kanneeLLanu nee gummam lO muggEsi veltunnaa. Juxtapose this song with the title song of Nenunnanu and you’d know what am trying to say. While the latter is written in a simple manner with thought provoking points, the present song is written in an extravagant style. Nonetheless, this one’s quite a melody with good orchestration. Good job Malik. The tune for the line Naa manasu nee needalo vodilesi veltunna sounds like that of Dil bebasi mein chupke se rotha hain from the song Jaanewafa [sad version of the Kuch Kuch Hota Hain title song composed by Jatin Lalit].

6. Anagananga fullfullfullhalfnil
If some of the beats of this song sound like the ones in Nee Kosam [Nenunnanu] then oh well, remember the inspiration part? That aside, this enchanting melody written by Chandrabose is sung beautifully by KK and Sunitha.

7. Andagaadu Muttukunte fullfullfullhalfnil
Tippu and Sunitha sing this one appropriately adding right amounts of mischief wherever appropriate. With this, Sunitha proves that she can sing any song with aplomb. In fact, I don’t think Sunitha got a chance to sing so many songs with varying moods and variety in one album, in recent times. Chandrabose words this one and Malik comes up with a foot tapping tune and nice interludes.

Apart from the above songs, this album also has a theme song which is okay.

To cut a long story short, Kalyani Malik and Harry Anand satisfy Nag’s fans with songs that are a right mix of class n mass. Almost all the songs are catchy and make a good impression in the very first hearing. Aditya has extracted right kind of songs from the music directors. Now, let’s wait and watch how well he puts them to use on screen.
