review of Thottigang - Definitely
not thotti album
-
Sreya Sunil
EVV
Satyanarayana, after directing his elder son Aryan Rajesh
in Hai, now directs his second son Naresh [whose name,
by the way, is prefixed with 'Allari', after his debut
film thereby making him 'Allari' Naresh] in his latest
home production Thottigang. Prabhudeva and Sunil
are the other members of this gang and Gazala and Anitha
are paired up with 'Allari' Naresh and Prabhudeva.
After
having delivered a series of eminently forgettable flops recently,
EVV Satyanarayana, is said to have put in his best efforts
into this movie to taste success, which once upon a time was
synonymous with his name. So, the first logical step in that
direction was to garner better support from his music director.
Thus, he ropes in DsriP [for all my new/not-so-regular readers,
thats what I call Devi Sri Prasad fondly] to come up
with some funky compositions. Thankfully, DsriP hasn't taken
the name of the movie too seriously and his songs are definitely
not thotti songs. Now, don't ask me what exactly thotti means.
The
hallmark of DsriP's album is the presence of atleast one melodious
number. And this album proves that point. Another noticeable
point of DsriP's album is that it has a funky composition
with a saxophone undercurrent in it. Yes, this album proves
that too. Yet another aspect of DsriP's album is he singing
atleast one song. Check on that checklist item too. Finally,
Sumangali gets to enthrall us in DsriP's albums and yes that
one's checked too. Having presented a small checklist, let
me talk business.
1.
Nuvve Kavali (Listen)
This, definitely, is an instant winner. DsriP, who is adept
at crafting lilting melodies, once again proves the point
here. Listen to the violin and veena usage in the interludes,
particularly. SP Charan and Sumangali sing this
one beautifully. I have written enough about these two singers
in my previous reviews and stating that again here would be
a mere repetition. Stop bothering about that repetition and
realize that you are stuck with the repeated listening of
this song. Surendra Krishna, a new lyricist I believe,
writes familiar yet good points about love.
2.
Oo Sodara (Listen)
This one starts off with the 'Om' chanting heard in
the Tirumala temple of Sri Venkateswara and then breaks in
to an easy going style. A nice composition [musically, lyrically
and vocally] talking about the pranks and happenings in a
marriage ceremony. Such songs are best seen on the screen
than heard. While Surendra Krishna's lyrics mainly
talk about the happenings in a marriage ceremony, Ranjith's
rendition of the song is good.
3.
Vechani Vechani Deham (Listen)
A passionate song where Chitra's seductive vocals and
the orchestration bring out the mood of the song very well.
Though Rajesh sounds good, I think SPB would have been a better
choice for this song. Rajesh is definitely a good singer
but the passion in his voice [especially in the stanzas] fails
to match with that of Chitra's. Lyrics by Surendra Krishna
are apt and implicit.
4.
Ori Nayano (Listen)
There was a boy. There was a girl. And they fell in love.
They wanna fly. High in the sky. To the world that's full
of joy.
Writes Varikuppala Yadagiri in this song. Also,
he could have added - They cannot wait. For that flight.
Which is far away in sight. Now that sums up the song
which talks about a guy and a girl who are about to get married
but who just cannot wait. Ahem! Sandeep, who sang soft
love songs until now, gets to sing a different song here and
he does a decent job. Kalpana sounds decent too.
5.
Gundello Nuvve (Listen)
Agreed its a fast paced song. Agreed its an iviting song where
the girl and guy are reaching out for each other. But what
I fail to agree and fathom is, why is DsriP's crooning
leaning towards the higher levels of excitement? Febi,
on the other hand, sounds okay 'coz she is much restrained,
well, comparatively only. Lyrics by Pothula Ravi Kiran
are nothing new.
6.
Kannepilla Arey Kannepilla (Listen)
A good folkish number with nice beats. It has the potential
of being a hit number, provided it is rightly placed in the
movie and well choreographed. Karthik sings this one
very well and Mathangi gives him ample support. Surendra
Krishna's lyrics are okay.
Some noteworthy
aspects of this album -
- "We
get to listen to the voices of some of the most talented
male playback singers in recent times- SP Charan, Rajesh,
Karthik, Sandeep and Ranjith. Its definitely refereshing
and encouraging to hear these young talented singers in
one album.
- "All the lyricists of this album are again new or
relatively new. Of them, Surendra Krishna definitely scores
above the rest.
DsriP's
efforts to encourage new talents into the industry are praiseworthy.
