Interview with Manoj Manchu
Date: October 10, 2008, Hyderabad
manoj manchu

Manoj Manchu’s latest film Nenu Meeku Telusa is releasing on 10 October 2008. Manoj plays the role of a guy who suffers from recurring amnesia. Manoj speaks about his passion and criteria for selecting movies in an exclusive interview to idlebrain.com

You had been telling that you consider this film as your first film. Why?
Because, Nenu Meeku Telusa? is the first film of my choice. I am not talking about success or failure here. I am passionate about acting in good films. I don’t know whether Nenu Meeku Telusa would become a hit or flop, but I am sure that it will make a mark for itself. We have seen many films in Telugu film industry spending over 20-30 crores in the name of production values and high quality. With a limited budget, we could able to get that technical glossiness in our film. We adapted the gorilla filmmaking techniques to create maximum impact with minimal resources. Nenu Meeku Telusa is the film of my taste.

What is the specialty of NMT?
People always ask me why I was doing mass film. They asked me why our films do not have the quality Hindi films possess. Why can’t directors narrate a story in a stylish manner? NMT is a stylish film made with innovation.

Tell us about your character?
I am doing the character of Aditya which denote rising sun. Like sun, he too rise every day with a black mind as he forget everything after he sleep in the night. Yet, he is confident about his life and manages it everyday.

You have seen the final copy. What is your take on it?
NMT is a very good film. I am not expecting it to be neither a super hit nor a record breaking film. But everybody will talk about and remember it as one of the good films ever made in Telugu film industry. Each and every technician will get a fresh lease of life though NMT.

Director Ajay Sastri said that you jump over buildings without any rope work or air beds. Why did you do risky shots?
What we do here is not even 1% of what Jackie Chan makes in his 50’s. We watch Tony Jaa’s dubbed films in Telugu and wonder about their entertaining fights. Why can’t we at least attempt to make it happen?

You seem to be having flexible body as you see differently in different stills of the movie?
For the introduction song in the film, I had abs and I was having 76 kg of weight. As a memory loss guy, I had 85 kgs of weight. During the college episode I was having 89 kgs. For a song Enduko mari, I put on 92 kgs. This was deliberate attempt to show variations as per the demand of the script.

Why are you trying to do films with new directors? Why can’t you do mass films with established ones?
Dasaradh gave Santosham and Surya Kiran gave Satyam. I did a film with each one of them and you know what the result is. Even Sanjay Leela Bansali can give you Sawariya film. There is no guarantee of success with any director. It’s better to fail while doing a different film than failing while churning out the formulaic and routine stuff. I have a passion for good technique and new age cinema. We should go to the next level of filmmaking.

Are you feeling tensed about the release?
I am not greedy or desperate about the result of the film. I should be passionate and proud of films I have done. So far, NMT gave me that satisfaction of acting in a good film. When I went to Hollywood last year and met a few of guys, they asked for a DVD of my film. I was embarrassed and ashamed to give a DVD of any of my previous films. NMT is a kind of film I would proudly distribute to any of the technicians in Hollywood.

Tell us about your next film?
Chandra Sekhar Yeleti will be directing my next film. This film will go to sets on 20 of October. This film has extensive airport backdrop and it will be shot in Malaysian airport.

Do you want to tell anything to the visitors of idlebrain.com?
NMT is a different film. And it requires support from everybody. We took a risk with full confidence. We got unimaginable hurdles while making the film and we crossed them successfully. NMT is an honest effort to make a new and stylish cinema in Telugu. Please watch NMT and encourage our team.
