Gudipoodi Srihari Review

tell a friend

An opportunity for director Gunasekhar to make a mass movie with an artistic touch. And for Mahesh Babu to assert his versatility. Dialogue writers Paruchuri Brothers once again provide a fine verbal base for this action dream. Surprisingly Mahesh Babu and Bhoomika, in the lead roles are the least talkative. Manisarma's music is notable for the background score elevating the drama.

The film is distinctly different from the Rayalaseema faction films, though some characters hail from there. The main drama is set in Hyderabad, to where Rayalaseema characters move. For this purpose, a huge and expensive set against Charminar backdrop was erected. Hero Ajay (Mahesh) lives in none of the houses there. He has his own entry into the house, through a trap door, to avoid being noticed by his disciplinarian police officer father (Mukhesh Rishi) and mischievous younger sister (Niharika). His mother (Geetha) is kind and affectionate.

Ajay is a kabaddi champion and goes to Kurnool to take part in a tournament. He meets Swapna (Bhoomika) and rescues her from the clutches of Obul Reddy (Prakash Raj). He then brings her to Hyderabad and takes her to his room through the trap door. And she continues to stay there without anyone's knowledge, blending among the many dolls in his room whenever anyone comes visiting Ajay. Ajay's priorities now are to get a passport and visa for Swapna so that she can move away to the US and then to win the national Kabaddi title for his team. He wins the title but fails to send her abroad, as Swapna refuses to leave him and go. How she becomes completely free of Obul Reddy to be with Ajay forms the rest of the story.

Sakuntala's character as the mother of Obul Reddy is far fetched. Despite the heavy make up and cigar in her mouth, she looks younger and unfit for the role.

Chandramohan as Swapna's father and Geetha perform their roles well. A scene showing Muslim devotees walking out of a masjid after Friday prayer and burka-clad Muslim student tuouping out of women's college from opposite direction walking across each other, into which Ajay and Swapna mingle to escape the notice of Obul Reddy is worth watching. Photographer Sekhar V. Joseph shows imaginative camera work.
