Mission Kashmir - A Preview
"For heaven's sake, my film script was written even before I started Kareeb two years ago. My hard-hitting subject basically revolves around the turmoil and turbulence in the Kashmir region from 1989 to 1999 and has nothing to do with the Kargil war" - Vidhu Vinod Chopra (Director)
If we are to believe Vidhu then Mission Kashmir is not a venture to cash on the jingoistic frenzy created by the Kargil War instead the movie is a portrayal of a young man grooming himself to kill those who adopt him after his parents get slaughtered in an encounter in the valley of Kashmir by none other than his step father Inayat Khan (Sanjay Dutt). The young man Altaf (Hrithik Roshan) finds himself with a band of renegades led by Hilal Koshistani (Jackie Shroff) who are on a stealthy mission called the 'Mission Kashmir' that will change the map of the subcontinent. Under the cover of this, Altaf continues his own mission - To kill the one whom he used to call 'Abba'. Will he succeed in his mission? Will Koshistani succeed in changing the map of the subcontinent? Lets keep the suspense.
Vidhu's Chemistry
Vidhu Vinod has so far reasonably successful in his way of running the main story with a parallel story running in background, which is also equally significant. Remember 1942 A Love Story? Vidhu portrayed a love story with the Indian war of independence as the background and he meshed both the stories so well that movie could certainly be categorized as classic. Even in Parinda he used the chilling gang war as background for a love story between two youngsters and yet was able to deliver a memorable film without a shade incongruence. Mission Kashmir also seems to be of the same genre the art of which Vidhu seems to have perfected.
Guess What?
Originally the movie was to star The Big Bachchan and Shahrukh Khan as father and son. The charming Ash was Vidhu's first choice to star opposite to Hrithik but Preity Zinta had perfect Kashmiri looks and could well be identified as one of them. Akshay Khanna was also prospected after Vidhu decided to drop Shahrukh from the project but finally Hrithik was signed. Sanjay Dutt who was signed up in place of the Big B, in a desperate attempt to get out of typecasting took up the challenge of acting as father of Hrithik. Smita Mishra, Shefali Chaya and Dimple Kapadia were considered for the role opposite to Sanjay as the mother of Hrithik Roshan but Sonali Kulkarni was finally signed for the role. Sonali Kulkarni had earlier won the filmfare award in 1997 for best actress for the Marathi film Doghi and she has starred in the internationally acclaimed Daayra directed by Amol Palekar.
The Foreword to the Movie
It will really be interesting to see whether Vidhu Vinod Chopra, rises up to what he has said, that the movie is not aimed at cashing on the umpteen times fried formula of Hindu - Muslim and the most recently evolved formula in bollywood of Kargil war. Honestly speaking Vidhu, the name couldn't suggest any thing more than this and so the viewers' might just get confused. Will he or will he not succeed once again with his chemistry, is a thing to be waited for but one aspect of Vidhu, I am sure about is that he seldom disappoints.
