Review

Story
Sameer Khan (Ajay Devgan) is the heartthrob of the entire nation. He is the hottest film star. He comes from a humble background. He was a theater artist for ‘Halla Bol’ group headed by Siddu (Pankaj Kapoor) - a reformed Chambal valley dacoit. Sameer Khan witnesses the murder of a girl in a pub and shies away from confessing to the cops. Over a period of time, his conscience catches up with him. He confesses to the cops that he was there at the time of the murder. The guys who murdered are the sons of powerful people. The rest of the story is all about how Sameer goes to the public with Halla Bol group to do justice to the girl.

Actors:
Pankaj Kapoor is ultimate as the head of Halla Bol. He should get an award for his terrific performance. Halla Bol is another film that exploits the acting prowess of Ajay Devgan. Ajay Devgan did a role that has many variations to it. Vidya Balan is good as a supportive wife. Darshan Jariwala who did the role of Mahatama in ‘Gandhi my father’ came up with a terrific performance in a contrastingly different character as a villain.

Technical departments:

Story - Screenplay - direction: The muder scene in this film is inspired by Jessica Lal episode. This film deals with the concept of what if the film hero try to become hero in real life. The way our dirty politicians defame him. This film also focuses on the burning issue of social apathy. Raj Kumar Santoshi also shown the negative side of the hero when he tries to bed women and when he chickens out when asked to be responsible. Direction by Raj Kumar Santoshi is first rate. Screenplay is good. The following moments are powerful

1. Ajay Devgan’s confession on TV media that he was afraid at first.
2. Pankaj Kapoor reaction when somebody tries to bribe him at swimming pool.
3. Ajay Devgan doing the undoable on the Persian carpet on the villain.
4. When Vidya Balan defends Ajay Devgan against divorce rumors.
5. When Ajay Devgan sends back Muslim leaders when they ask him to play the minority card.
6. Pankaj Kapoor outburst on the media at hospital.
7. The way villain repeats about power, paisa and public in his dialogue.
8. The way villain ridicules the brand endorsement of film stars.

Other departments: The photography of the film is good. Dialogues are excellent. Background music goes well with the theme. Editing is crisp. Digital intermediate is fine. Stunts are well conceived.

Analysis: Halla Bol is yet another socially responsible film after Rang De Basanti. Raj Kumar Santoshi takes Jessica Lal case and Amir’s statements on Narmada Bachao as the base for the film. This film also deals with social apathy and irresponsibility of film stars. The film’s strengths are brilliant performances by all artists (especially Pankaj Kapoor) and a tight script. On the flip side, the climax of the film appears too cinematic and brief. On a whole, Halla Bol is a well made film. Go and watch it.
