Dubbing Mania

Telugu Cinema field is passing through a bad phase. Dubbing films are making most of the hey. Thirteen film are released in the month of November, 1999. Out of thirteen only three films (Preyasi Raave, Ramasakkanodu and Sambayya) are straight ones and remaining ten (Titanic, Pathala Sundari, Swamy Vivekananda, Oke Okkadu, Pathighatana, Oke Okkadu, Gunda Durbar, Jodi, Pellante Idera, Naandi and Madana Mohini) are dubbed one's.

If we analyze the films that are released in this year, Nara Simha, Upendra and Oke Okkadu gave Telugu straight films a run for their money. Only high profile dubbed film that bombed this year is 'Premikula Roju'.

If we take the other way round, its been ages since a Telugu dubbed film played well in Tamil Nadu. Telugu blockbuster 'Toliprema' took a humble beating in Tamil. Same is the case with Tamil 'Anthahpuram'.

If we look at the trade aspect, Telugu buyers bought Tamil films to the tune of several crores. There is lot of competition among Telugu buyers. The situation is exactly opposite in Tamil Nadu. They are making it sure that no Telugu film is bought for an amount above 50 lacs. Even films starring Chiranjeevi, Nagarjuna and Venkatesh are priced beyond 45 lacs. Only exception is Vijaya Shanti. Her filmscommand more price than any other Telugu Hero's film. 'Choodalani Vundi' sold for 55 lacs. Only two films managed to cross the 60 lac barrier. They are special effects extravaganzas 'Ammoru' and 'Devi'.

As theaters need feeding for survival, theater owners are content with running dubbed films in their theaters. If this situation continues Telugu Film Industry will get killed (or is already got killed?) by the dubbing films.

To add fuel to the fire, half of the straight films that are made in Telugu are remade/inspired ones.
