WHAT THE HECK IS THIS PIRATED-CUTE-STUFF???
By Srilakshmi Katragadda

(After seeing the legal notices posted in R-E-D in Idlebrain.com, definitely the alarm bells are on for those who produce the pirated-cute-stuff overseas??? Let's look at some of the realities in North America and possibly the solutions as well….)

Well….I live in a place called "North America" where 9-out-of-11 desis watch only "bootlegged" movies….it's a "911" situation here when it comes to Indian movies are concerned….Pathetic!!!…. but True!!! The simple logic is why burn so-much greenbacks just for a movie!!! when a cheap source like "a pirated version" is readily available for 1$-Video and 3$-DVD rental!!! If watched in a theater it will cost for a family of four, 8$*4=32$ plus atleast two-combo-popcorns for kids totaling atleast 50$ taxes included. If this logic applies to you too, you should read further without any inhibitions….

The main accusation here is some Indian movies are never released in the theaters so they have to solely depend on Videos and DVDs. The option is to get one whether original or pirated …. who knows…. when asked the rental fellow always says it is a good print ….the conversation goes like this….but at the end when you insert that cute stuff….you definitely have that hair-pulling-frustration on one-out-of-two basis!!! If you have lot of hair and needs to go to the salon for a hair-cut, try out this cute stuff …. you save 10 times more as having a hair-cut is expensive here and folks can save drastically on their budget. Got the idea!!!

Think about how much a producer looses for a "sensible movie"….let's keep all those running-around-trees movies aside for now!!! Producer comes to such a situation that he will never make a mistake of making a "sensible movie" atleast keeping the overseas market in view. Let's take Compu-professionals from India….they do a lot of bargaining with their consultants when it comes to hourly rate is concerned….atleast 25$ per hour goes the talk even if the economy is on a dip….but when it comes to spending a buck more for the much needed entertainment which is vital to-get-back to next week's work….N-O-W-A-Y!!!shouts their budget logistics!!! The producer is drowned without a trace humming "never-never-never-overseas" again….his last words ofcourse!!!

The other day I read an open letter from a Silicon Valley guy in Idlebrain that NRIs deserve a "pat" too for promoting Indian movies by watching the cute stuff spending their valuable earning-time. Why a pat-on-their-back??? because these folks give a "critique of the movie" on the internet I guess…. (you do not need to pay specially for the phone line for internet in North America & there is a flat-rate here for the phone line as well as internet….another clue for an effective budget management!!!)

Coming to the point, one accusation is-they do not want to shell out their money simply because Indian movies does not deserve the greenbacks-support as the quality of Indian DVDs do not match with that of Hollywood DVDs….and folks does not want to listen to the cost-crap-argument either….

Another interesting accusation is, Indian technology trends are copied from Hollywood so why not copy the marketing trends too from Hollywood which never failed at Box-office though there are as many pirated versions prevail here too…. Guys, I want to make one interesting point here…. the locals have a perfect weekend concept….they go for outing with the family….be it a movie-a casino-to play pool-or having a pint of beer….together….the quality of time matters for them….not the cost!!! so though they have a VCR or a DVD player at home, they still want to watch a sensible movie on big-screen with their family as part of their outing, the concept of being-together and sharing-together after a tough work out…. so Hollywood movies still have-a-say and reigns supreme at Box-Office though there are pirated versions!!! What about the D-E-S-I-S in North America??? Do we care for our quality of time shared together in an outing with the family too except the hourly rate logistics???

An other one is -the whole Indian system has to be fixed regarding cable operators and the concept of HUNDRED DAYS….. I suppose, if the DVD print is good, these operators will telecast the movie in the whole area doing lot more damage so producers should not make good prints like releasing original DVD prints at all…. and let the theaters gross collections to keep HUNDRED-DAY-SPREE!!! the producers can not take tough legal action either with the kind of Soft-law prevailing in India!!! With this kind of logic, maximum damage is done in the overseas….with the pirated cute stuff!!! Man, come out with some sort of solution!!! Looks like a big-time-loop here…. On the contrary, Hollywood movies do not care about HUNDRED-DAY-SPREE and the "pirated-cute-stuff" is taken care off if telecast for a public viewing by the LAW. Marketing on the basis of Hollywood movies is not possible in this scenario I guess….

So, what needs to be done??? Fix-the-system is the answer!!! Forget about loosing the revenue on Indian soil because of pirated cute stuff!!! What about our "911" situation in North America??? What about English movies made by tasty Indian producers??? Do you guys know that there are some English movies made too??? yes, it's a fact!!! but after the movie is made, it has to be kept in the box itself for one more year simply because no overseas distributor wanted to buy succumbing to the desi-way-of-budget-logistics!!! GREAT STUFF… Is n't it??? So, NO-OSCAR is in sight for an Indian-English movie I guess…

Let us satisfy with pirated-cute-stuff and with mother-tongue-movies for the time being!!! For god sake, do not dial "911" now!!! Just support those people WHO FIGHTS AGAINST PIRACY & SAVE THE PRODUCER!!!Let us satisfy with pirated-cute-stuff and with mother-tongue-movies for the time being!!! For god sake, do not dial "911" now!!! Just support those people WHO FIGHTS AGAINST PIRACY & SAVE THE PRODUCER!!!
