Different Perspective - Krrish

What is Different Perspective?
We do have a tendency to get carried away by the success of a film and rarely look deep down into it to justify the ‘praises’ heaped on the film as well as on director. Should success blind our ‘thinking’ and shouldn’t we study its shortcomings as well. Agreed audience appreciation is all too important but will it not be a crime to overlook its flaws. This is just an attempt to pause for `moment’ and analyze the structuring of the `plot’ and how it would have been a notable effort if director had adhered to few rules of  Filmmaking grammar.

It’s a “Different Perspective’ of popular films by a “Friendly Viewer’.

Barring some well-captured action sequences and Hritick’s performance, director Rakesh Roshan’s blockbuster didn’t live up the big hype. Since director was unable to discover strong conflicts that would befit the ‘larger-than-life’ role of the protagonist and forced Hritick to use his ‘abnormal powers’ to save few kids from circus and on petty robbers (which any Indian hero would do even without these powers). Hritick did possess big powers (running, flying), ala Superman but had no real big villains or issues to fight for. `Messiahs’ are supposed to save lives from a near impossible situations, banish issues that affect common man and take on an `all-powerful' baddy to justify his immense powers. Rather director takes up beaten-to-death ‘conflicts’ and a caricature (Nasserundin Shah) to let down audience as he treads them in an all-to-familiar path bereft of any breath-taking experience. After making two hits with his star-son, Rakesh was probably bit over-confident as he gave more prominence to ‘form’ than ‘content. Agreed this was a hit on the strength of its sensational openings but does it have great ‘recall value’, we will be forced to think twice.

Director Rakesh Roshan’s sequel to “Koi Mil Gaya” could have been much better if its script had been tuned to perfection. By establishing protagonist as `powerful’ guy at the outset, Rakesh left nothing for audience imagination. Rather viewers had to wait and bear his childish pranks before Priyanka arrives to discover his superpowers. Once he convinces his mother and reaches Singapore, audience waited with bated breath to find their desi superman reveal his powers. But it turns out to be a damp squib. First he dons the ‘getup’ to save few kids from a burning tent and then to quarrel with petty robbers. He can master any skill with his great `grasping” power ( as he masters sword-wielding art) but it wasn't sensibly utilised. Audience would have visited the theatre to applause the ‘feats’ of a lager-than-life hero but were forced to witness a Goliath fighting Lilliputians (given a choice even kids would have preferred to stay back to watch Power Rangers and Spiderman). Coming to Priyanka it’s a poorly etched role. She brings him to ‘retain’ her job but is quite confused about her love for him. Her failing to recognize Hririck with a small mask even from close quarters as he holds her close to him is unbelievable (as if director instructed her not to). With no issues left, director tries to shore up the proceedings and melodrama by bringing back elder Hritick but it looks contrived since it doesn’t any new ‘charm’.

Director is known for his liking for director K.Vishwanath as he made few remakes with him. He seems to have been heavily inspired by Vishwanth’s “Sarada”(just try to recollect similarities) so he just  changed the protagonists(dual roles) from female to male and made “Kaho Naa Pyar Hai”. Probably he has vaguely inspired by clichéd “Aadavi Donga” and some other Telugu potboiler for his latest flick. He can get be inspired by Telugu film ‘plots’ but he needs to work on it to make the script contemporary and engrossing like in the case of “KNPH”.
