Different Perspective - Stalin

What is Different Perspective?
We do have a tendency to get carried away by the success of a film and rarely look deep down into it to justify the ‘praises’ heaped on the film as well as on director. Should success blind our ‘thinking’ and shouldn’t we study its shortcomings as well. Agreed audience appreciation is all too important but will it not be a crime to overlook its flaws. This is just an attempt to pause for `moment’ and analyze the structuring of the `plot’ and how it would have been a notable effort if director had adhered to few rules of  Filmmaking grammar.

It’s a “Different Perspective’ of popular Telugu films by a “Friendly Viewer’.

Director Murugadoss had the skill to dig out a 'novel' plot and also convinced numero uno actor Chiranjeevi but unfortunately he ended up dishing out a cliched potboiler instead of a path-breaking film. The `noble theme' of how good deeds of an individual can negate his bad deeds got diluted in the beaten-to-death narrative and stereotype characters. Inappropriate blending of Chiranjeevi's charisma with a socio-centric message marred director's debut Telugu film. If you agree that certain unique themes demand unusual narration let us go further deep into it or else skip the article.

It can go down as one of the `best' themes in the annals of Telugu cinema but has it joined the band of well-crafted films, we are forced to give it a second thought. Probably director was confused about how to propagate the message of helping others. He starts off on the right note by making his protagonist to help 'physically and visually' challenged girls in their exams. But later protagonist looses track and indulges in trivial deeds like saving an infant from a parked car.( Kushboo could have stayed back near car to inform infant's parents) and another guy helps the newly married couple with his bike. Director hasn't realized that every section of society like-youth-middle-aged and old people- have their own limitations in extending help. Was director suggesting to people that they should just solve ‘momentary’ problems or long-term problems of his fellow beings and his screenplay fails to reflect these issues threadbare to legitimize his ‘theme’ instead more footage is wasted on silly comedy between Chiru and Trisha and his friends.  Unfortunately he chooses the ‘chain’ help (inspired by notorious chain marketing business) to pursue his mission but he failed to address the broader perspective of his theme that how an individual’s good deeds can even save his life in time. He deserves a pat for trying to explore ‘cosmic law’ (what would be a proportionate gain or sin for a particular deed) but lacks the narrative skills to explain it logically and convincingly.

Midway through when Chiranjeevi is in dilemma whether his ‘mission’ is on the right track he should have sought the opinion of his aged mother than his elder sister since only elders who have seen life in its totality can assure and guide him regarding his unique mission. By making his mother (despite casting talented Sarada) a gullible lady director looses out a good opportunity. Only by experience an individual can advice the relevance of good and bad deeds since there is no book to guide us instantly. However his resolution of saving the protagonist from a very risky cardiac operation does justify the cosmic theory. Director begins and ends on a right note but loses his way for 2 hours midway through to dabble in boring confrontation scenes, love track and clichéd ingredients underestimating the ‘intelligence’ of our audience who were panting for more on the topic but returned disappointed.

When Chiranjeevi claimed that it was one of the ‘best’ themes of his career he was just stating the fact but he himself should have been disappointed with the final outcome since director just rode on his ‘charisma’ than on the novel plot he approved. Director Murugadoss should have developed strong heroine and mother character to make his efforts more engrossing. But it ends up as a best case of good story gone awry.
