Interview with Sphurthi Kumar, B. Tech by Sreya Sunil

Date: 03rd April 2002 Venue: Director residence

Foreword: This article is solely based on the imagination of the writer. It's just a piece of fiction written for the purpose of entertainment and bears no resemblance to any events that have taken place in the past or any person(s) living or dead. It's assumed that coincidences to any person(s) living or dead will be taken as unintentional. An advice: please don't try to brainstorm/question/debate upon certain things. Just sail through, and forget the depth.

Idlebrain.com met with the latest hotshot director of Tollywood Mr. Sphurthi Kumar, B.Tech, at his residence for a tête-à-tête. Excerpts from the interview -

Your name sounds very different.

Sphurthi means inspiration. My parents were inspired by the word 'sphurthi' and in that inspiration they named me Sphurthi Kumar. They always wanted me to get inspired by many things in life and also inspire many people. I guess I can call myself 'sarthakanamadheyudu' after all how many people inspire others even by their name? Many directors in this field attach B.A, B.Com, M.Com tags to their names, so I thought why not add my hard 'earned' degree (don't ask me how much I had to shell out for getting it) B.Tech to my name. So here I am as Sphurthi Kumar, B Tech. There's nothing technical about it (grins).

Tell us about yourself?

What can I say about myself? I am a very modest person. But since you have asked, here I go. I am too intelligent. I grasp things very quickly. In fact which movie-buff doesn't? After watching so many routine movies since their childhood, movie enthusiasts start daydreaming that they can direct any movie. But what most of them fail to realize is, to survive in this industry one needs to either 'get or set'.

Get or Set? Could you elaborate?

Oh sure! (with a thousand watts glow on his face, he continues) Its very simple you see. One has to either 'get inspired' or 'set trends with their creativity'. If you are creative enough then you would set trends if that's not possible, you would get inspired from other 'sources'. For the record, this is my theory. Isn't it intelligent?

It sure is. So, do you 'get' or 'set' ?

An intelligent person like me would not just 'get' or 'set'. I get inspired by an idea, mould it to suit our nativity and dish it out for the audience thereby setting a new trend of 'get and set'. That's a pretty difficult task you see. I don't want to give out further details. I am very modest.

Oh yes! we've just started getting an inkling of your modesty sir. Tell us something about your movie?

In one word, my movie is 'different'. If you give me on more word I would add 'refreshing'. If you let me add two more words I would describe it as 'never-before'.

Your words sound very different and refreshing. But what's the story like?

As such, there's nothing called story in the movie. Its all treatment based. Before you pose your next question about my treatment, I will say 'I would rather let my work speak than my words'.

What is the title of the movie?

'Nuvvu Nuvve Nenu Nene'. It's a very different title, isn't it?

Yes, it surely is refreshingly different.

Yes! Yes!! I knew people would say this. I wanted my title to be catchy and at the same time make the audience curious about it. Everybody knows what the title means, but they should throng to the theaters with a heightened curiosity to find out why the movie is titled so. The punch line of the movie is 'It's my story! It's your story! It's a love story!!

Is your title inspired by the recent successes of 'Nuvvu' series of movies?

These days it's the trend of youth stories. I am very clear about the targeted audience. I am clear about the story and moreover I am also very clear that my movie would definitely be a hit mainly because of the 'Nuvvu' sentiment. Look at the recent 'Nuvvu' movies - Nuvvu vasthavani, Nuvve Kavali, Nuvvu Nenu, Manasanthe Nuvve, Nuvvu Naaku Nachhav, Nuvvu Leka Nenu Lenu, they are all hits. With two 'nuvvu's in my movie how can I miss the bulls eye?

Most of the directors get into a mould-trap. What care are you taking to avoid getting into such a trap?

I don't believe in any trap. It's all a crap. I am an ardent follower of my 'get-set' theory. As long as there are ideas, as long as they can inspire me why would I repeat myself? Its as simple as dressing up yourself. Some directors always wear only white khadi shirts but I go with what's in vogue. Similarly some directors don't mind re-producing what they have been producing so far. But I don't belong to such category. I am not a bachelor of arts. I am a bachelor of technology. I update myself with the latest technology. (grins again)

Why do you go for mumbai heroines in your movies?

Mumbai Heroines are easy to work with. They don't know the language so they listen to what we portray their chracter as. They perform as we want without any hassles. As it is, we have enough interruptions from the heroes these days so why invite trouble in the form of heroines too? They are eager to prove their mettle in Tollywood so they heed to our words without questions. And believe me, its not mainly for the scanty clothes they are willing to wear that we rush to them. In fact, the designer clothes these heroines demand are much costlier than the hero's costumes. (sighs)

How do you conceive a film?

I recently read somewhere, a famous Hindi movie director complain that people are blaming him saying that he rents DVDs and tapes of English movies, copies them and makes movies. I guess somebody becoming a 'slave' of jealousy, blurted out the 'secret' of this director by 'mistake'. There will be no wonder if somebody out here says the same about me. In fact if they say so, then I would like to correct them by saying why run elsewhere when there is so much inspiration to draw from our own Telugu and Hindi movies? There is nothing wrong in getting inspired from others. Getting inspired and giving it our own touch is also an art which people lacking it are jealous about. (laments about some jealous people in the industry)

Who are your favorite directors?

Every director who inspires me is my favorite. The list if my favorite directors would be endless. But my aim is to top such a list of an aspiring/new director.

What are your next ventures?

Lets see! I have not decided anything as of now. I am waiting for 'this-movie-is-a-copy-of-those-movies' kinda movies to end. Meanwhile I am in the process of 'get'ting some idea to set new trends.

Which film did you like in the recent releases?

You will know that once you see my latest movie (grins and winks).

Do you have any suggestion for aspiring directors?

Follow your dreams and remember my 'get-set' theory.

How did the name idlebrain.com sound to you?

Very good and apt. As they say - idle brain is devil's workshop. If nobody is idle then there is no evil, if there is no evil how would we ever appreciate the greatness of being good. For good to triumph over evil, we should have idle brains. For movies to exist there should be stories, and in each movie good wins over the bad, if the writers weren't idle we would not have stories at all and thus no movies. So, there is so much importance to idlebrain.
