The Indian film industry is mourning the loss of veteran actor, director, and screenwriter K. Bhagyaraj, who passed away on Saturday morning in Chennai following a heart attack. He was 73.

Born Krishnaswamy Bhagyaraj in 1953 in Tamil Nadu, Bhagyaraj began his career as an assistant director under legendary filmmakers G. Ramakrishnan and Bharathiraja. He later worked as a screenplay writer for several Bharathiraja films before making his directorial debut with Suvarilladha Chiththirangal in 1979.

Widely regarded as one of Tamil cinema’s finest screenplay writers, Bhagyaraj acted in over 75 films and directed more than 25 films during a career spanning nearly five decades. Fondly known as the “Screenplay King,” he was celebrated for his relatable storytelling, sharp humour, and memorable family dramas.

Bhagyaraj made his acting debut in Bharathiraja’s 16 Vayathinile (remade in Telugu as Padaharella Vayasu) and went on to establish himself as a versatile filmmaker. He also introduced actresses Urvashi and Kalpana to the film industry.

Apart from being an accomplished actor and director, Bhagyaraj excelled as a writer, composer, and producer. He won the Filmfare Award for Best Actor (Tamil) for the iconic Mundhanai Mudichu (remade in Telugu as Moodu Mullu) in 1983 and received the SIIMA Lifetime Achievement Award in 2014 in recognition of his immense contribution to Indian cinema.

Several of his stories were successfully remade across Indian languages. He wrote the stories for Hindi hits such as Aakhree Raasta, starring Amitabh Bachchan, and Woh 7 Din, featuring Anil Kapoor. In recent years, he appeared in notable Telugu films like 35 Chinna Katha Kaadu and Kuberaa.

Bhagyaraj’s demise marks the end of an era for Tamil cinema. Condolences have been pouring in from across the film fraternity and political circles, with many remembering him as a legendary storyteller whose work inspired generations of filmmakers.
