South cinema sizzles at 70th National Film Awards

The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting at a press conference in New Delhi on Friday declared the winners of 70th National Film Awards. The top prize went to Malayalam film, Aattam: The Play, which was adjudged as the best feature film while Sooraj R Barjatya was chosen as the best director for Uunchai.

Kannada star Rishab Shetty, who became a pan Indian sensation with Kantara, was chosen as the best actor, while the best actress will be shared between Nithya Menen, who got it for the Tamil film Thiruchitrambalam, and Manasi Parekh for the Gujarati movie Kutch Express.

Telugu film Karthikeya 2, which found love in the north Indian shores as well, was announced as the best Telugu film, while our own choreographer Jani Master is taking away the best choreographer award along with Sathish Krishnan for ‘Megham Karukatha’ in Thiruchitrambalam.

Kantara also won best popular film providing wholesome entertainment. Rishab Shetty wrote and directed the film as well. It’s a Hombale Films Production.

Mozart of Madras AR Rahman won the National Film Award for Best Music Director (background music) for his work in Mani Ratnam’s Ponnyin Selvan-Part 1, which was also named the best Tamil film. Another top award, the best cinematographer, went to Ravi Varman for his work in Ponniyin Selvan-Part. Pritam got the award for best music director (songs) for Brahmastra-Part 1.

For writing Aattam, Anand Ekarshi has been picked for the best screenplay, while Anbariv won best action choreography for KGF Chapter 2.

Neena Gupta was the best supporting actress for Uunchai and Pawan Malhotra best-supporting actor for the Haryanvi film Fouja.

The jury included – Rahul Rawail, Chairperson of the Feature Film Jury; Nila Madhab Panda, Chairperson of the Non-Feature Film Jury and Gangadhar Mudalair, Chairperson of the Best Writing on Cinema Jury.
