It is with profound sorrow that we announce the passing of Kota Srinivasa Rao, a legendary figure in Indian cinema and a revered personality in public life, on July 13, 2025, at his residence in Filmnagar, Hyderabad. He was 83. Rao succumbed to age-related health complications, leaving behind an unparalleled legacy in Telugu cinema and beyond. He is survived by his wife, Rukmini, and two daughters.

Born on July 10, 1942, in Kankipadu, Andhra Pradesh, to Seetha Rama Anjaneyulu, a doctor, Kota Srinivasa Rao initially aspired to follow in his father’s footsteps. However, his passion for the performing arts led him to the stage during his college years, where he honed his craft while pursuing a Bachelor of Science degree. Before his illustrious film career, he briefly worked at the State Bank of India, a testament to his diverse journey.

Rao made his cinematic debut in 1978 with the Telugu film Pranam Khareedu, marking the beginning of a remarkable career that spanned over four decades and more than 750 films across Telugu, Tamil, Hindi, Kannada, and Malayalam cinema. Known for his commanding screen presence, unique voice, and impeccable dialogue delivery, Rao was a master of versatility, seamlessly transitioning between villainous, comedic, and emotionally layered character roles. His performances in films such as Aha Naa Pellanta, Gaayam, Money, Aa Naluguru, Prathighatana, Hello Brother and Krishnam Vande Jagadgurum earned him widespread acclaim and a permanent place in the hearts of audiences. His Tamil debut in Saami (2003) and his final Kannada film Kabzaa (2023) showcased his ability to transcend linguistic boundaries, captivating viewers across India.

A recipient of nine prestigious Nandi Awards from the Andhra Pradesh government, Rao was honored with the Padma Shri in 2015 for his immense contributions to Indian cinema. His work was further recognized with the SIIMA Award for his role in Krishnam Vande Jagadgurum (2012). Beyond acting, Rao lent his voice as a dubbing artist and even sang for a few films, showcasing his multifaceted talent.

Outside of cinema, Kota Srinivasa Rao served as a Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) from Vijayawada East, representing the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) from 1999 to 2004. His commitment to public service and his deep understanding of societal issues earned him respect in political circles. Union Minister Kishan Reddy described him as a figure who “inspired youth towards dharma and values,” while Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu noted that his contributions to cinema and theatre would remain unforgettable.

Rao’s personal life was marked by both joy and tragedy. He endured the heartbreaking loss of his only son, Kota Venkata Anjaneya Prasad, in a road accident in Hyderabad in 2010. Prasad, an actor himself, had shared the screen with his father in films like Gaayam 2 and Siddham. Rao’s younger brother, Kota Sankara Rao, also an actor, continues the family’s artistic legacy.

The Telugu film industry and its fans mourn the loss of a giant, with tributes pouring in from luminaries such as Chiranjeevi, who called him a “multifaceted genius,” and Ravi Teja, who cherished him as a mentor and family. Rao’s collaborations with top actors like Krishna, Chiranjeevi, Balakrishna, Nagarjuna, Venkatesh, Mahesh Babu, and Pawan Kalyan, as well as his iconic on-screen partnership with comedian Babu Mohan in nearly 60 films, cemented his status as a cornerstone of Tollywood.

Kota Srinivasa Rao’s legacy is one of unparalleled artistry, dedication, and humanity. His ability to breathe life into every character—whether a menacing villain, a hilarious comic, or a poignant father figure—will continue to inspire generations. As the Telugu proverb goes, his performances will remain “cheragani mudra” (an indelible mark) in the annals of Indian cinema.

భారత సినిమా రంగానికి చెందిన గొప్ప నటుడు, తెలుగు ప్రజల మనసుల్లో చెరగని ముద్ర వేసిన విలక్షణ నటుడు కోట శ్రీనివాసరావు గారు జూలై 13, 2025న హైదరాబాద్ ఫిల్మ్‌నగర్‌లోని తన నివాసంలో మృతి చెందారు. ఆయన వయస్సు 83 సంవత్సరాలు. వయసు పైబడటం కారణంగా వచ్చిన అనారోగ్య సమస్యలతో తుదిశ్వాస విడిచారు. ఆయన కుటుంబంలో భార్య రుక్మిణి మరియు ఇద్దరు కుమార్తెలు ఉన్నారు.

1942, జూలై 10న ఆంధ్రప్రదేశ్‌లోని కంకిపాడులో జన్మించిన కోట శ్రీనివాసరావు గారు, వైద్యుడైన సీతారామ అంజనేయులు గారి కుమారులు. తండ్రి వృత్తిని అనుసరించాలనే కోరిక ఉన్నప్పటికీ, కళల పట్ల ఉన్న ఆసక్తి కారణంగా కళాశాల రోజుల్లోనే నాటకాల ద్వారా తన నటనా ప్రయాణాన్ని ప్రారంభించారు. బీఎస్సీ చదువుతూ స్టేజ్ పై తాను సాధించిన అనుభవం తరువాత ఆయనను సినిమా రంగంలోకి తీసుకొచ్చింది. కొంతకాలం స్టేట్ బ్యాంక్ ఆఫ్ ఇండియాలో ఉద్యోగిగా కూడా పనిచేశారు.

1978లో వచ్చిన 'ప్రాణం ఖరీదు' అనే తెలుగు చిత్రంతో సినీ రంగంలోకి అడుగుపెట్టి, నాలుగు దశాబ్దాలకు పైగా కొనసాగిన తన చిరస్మరణీయ కెరీర్‌లో 750కు పైగా చిత్రాల్లో నటించారు. తెలుగు, తమిళ, హిందీ, కన్నడ, మలయాళ భాషల్లో ఆయన తన నటనతో మెప్పించారు. విలన్, కామెడీ, సెంటిమెంట్ — ఏ పాత్రైనా తనదైన శైలిలో మెప్పించిన ఆయన పోషించిన పాత్రలు, 'ఆహా నా పెళ్లంట', 'గాయం', 'మనీ', 'ఆ నలుగురు', 'బొమ్మరిల్లు', 'కృష్ణం వందే జగద్గురుం' లాంటి సినిమాల్లో ఎంతో ఆదరణ పొందాయి. 2003లో తమిళంలో 'సామి'తో, 2023లో కన్నడంలో 'కబ్జా' తో చివరిసారిగా కనిపించారు.

ఆంధ్రప్రదేశ్ ప్రభుత్వం నుండి 9 నంది అవార్డులు, కేంద్ర ప్రభుత్వం నుండి 2015లో 'పద్మశ్రీ' లభించిన కోట గారికి SIIMA అవార్డు వంటి మరెన్నో సత్కారాలు కూడా లభించాయి. కొన్ని సినిమాలకు డబ్బింగ్ ఆర్టిస్టుగానే కాకుండా, కొన్ని పాటలు కూడా పాడిన ఆయనలో ఉన్న బహుముఖ ప్రతిభను ఇండస్ట్రీ ఎప్పటికీ గుర్తుంచుకుంటుంది.

కోట గారు రాజకీయాల్లోనూ తనదైన పాత్రను పోషించారు.1999 నుండి 2004 వరకు విజయవాడ ఈస్ట్ నియోజకవర్గం నుండి భారతీయ జనతా పార్టీ (BJP) తరఫున ఎమ్మెల్యేగా ప్రజాసేవ చేశారు. కేంద్ర మంత్రి కిషన్ రెడ్డి ఆయనను "ధర్మ మార్గాన్ని, విలువలను యువతలో నాటిన వ్యక్తి"గా అభివర్ణించగా, సీఎం చంద్రబాబు నాయుడు గారు “అయన సేవలు మరువలేనివి” అని అన్నారు.

కోట గారి జీవితం ఆనందం, విషాదాలతో కూడి ఉంది. 2010లో ఆయన ఏకైక కుమారుడు వెంకట ఆంజనేయ ప్రసాద్ రోడ్డు ప్రమాదంలో ప్రాణాలు కోల్పోవడం అత్యంత దురదృష్టకరం. ప్రసాద్ గారు కూడా గాయం 2, సిద్ధం వంటి చిత్రాల్లో తన తండ్రితో కలిసి నటించారు. ఆయన తమ్ముడు కోట శంకరరావు కూడా నటుడే కావడం గమనార్హం.

కోట గారిని స్మరించుకుంటూ మెగాస్టార్ చిరంజీవి "బహుముఖ ప్రతిభావంతుడు", హీరో రవితేజ "మన కుటుంబ సారథి"గా అభివర్ణించారు. కృష్ణ, చిరంజీవి, బాలకృష్ణ, నాగార్జున, వెంకటేశ్, మహేశ్ బాబు, పవన్ కళ్యాణ్ వంటి తారలతో పాటు బాబు మోహన్ తో కలిసి చేసిన సుమారు 60 సినిమాలు ఆయన నటనకు శాశ్వత గుర్తింపునిచ్చాయి.

విలన్‌గా భయపెట్టినా, కామెడీతో నవ్వించినా, తండ్రిగా కంటతడిపెట్టించినా — కోట శ్రీనివాసరావు గారి నటనకి సాటి లేదు. తెలుగు సినీ చరిత్రలో ఆయనది చెరగని ముద్ర.
