The quintessential Telugu girl Laya made her debut as a lead actress with Swayamvaram, instantly capturing everyone’s attention. Her journey in cinema took off from there, with notable performances in films like Preminchu, Manoharam, Manasunna Maaraju, Nee Premakai, and Missamma.
Unexpectedly, Laya returned to the spotlight while introducing her daughter to the silver screen. Reflecting on her personal life, she mentioned that she had hoped her first marriage proposal would work out – and it did. She got married with the approval of her parents and settled in the US. She shared that Telugu people in America don’t usually react much when they see her, and she has gracefully taken on the roles of mother, wife, and professional.
Her re-entry into cinema happened almost by accident. A few years ago, through a WhatsApp group of friends, she found out about an audition for Amar Akbar Anthony, which was seeking a girl aged 8 to 12. She sent her daughter’s photos, and when the director reached out, Laya casually agreed to do a cameo herself.
That brief appearance opened new doors, and she’s now making a comeback to Telugu cinema with Thammudu, starring Nithiin. She’s currently busy giving media interviews, sharing stories of her journey from Swayamvaram to Thammudu.
In Thammudu, she’s playing a strong-minded government officer - a character she’s never portrayed before. Director Venu Sriram approached her after watching an interview she gave two years ago. With her husband being a doctor, he helped take her photos during breaks from work, and they sent them to the director, who immediately approved her for the role.
Laya recalls that when she first met the director, he asked, “Haven’t you heard the story yet?” She expressed her eagerness to hear it, and once she did, she was deeply impressed. She described her role in Thammudu as a rare and meaningful one she couldn’t say no to.
Laya appreciates the importance director Venu Sriram gives to female characters. Thammudu features five key women, each with significant roles—including hers. She noted that none of the characters feel forced into the story; if any of them were missing, the film would feel incomplete. That’s why she felt she shouldn’t miss the opportunity to play such a meaningful role.
Looking back on her early days in cinema, Laya reflects on how much has changed. In those days, actresses would accept solo heroine roles without even a proper story narration. Today, heroines have the liberty to ask for full narrations, and directors are more open and thorough in explaining the characters. She admitted that due to the lack of proper story context in the past, she sometimes faced challenges in choosing the right roles.
She also noted the stark differences between then and now in terms of performance expectations, styling, technical standards, and overall perfection. After Thammudu, she revealed she’ll also be acting in a film alongside Sivaji.

కథానాయికగా అడుగుపెట్టిన మొదటి సినిమా స్వయంవరంతో అందరి కళ్ళనూ తనవైపు తిప్పుకున్న పదహారణాల తెలుగమ్మాయి లయ. అలా మొదలైన ఆమె సినీ ప్రయాణంలో ప్రేమించు, మనోహరం, మనసున్న మారాజు, నీ ప్రేమకై, మిస్సమ్మ లాంటి ఎన్నో మంచి సినిమాల్లో నటించారు. తన పాపను వెండితెరకు పరిచయం చేసే క్రమంలో అనుకోకుండానే మళ్ళీ తిరిగి మెరిసారు నటి లయ. అనుకున్న వెంటనే అయిపోదు కదా అనుకుంటూనే పెళ్ళికి తన తల్లితండ్రుల దగ్గర పచ్చ జెండా ఊపిన లయ మొదటి పెళ్లి సంబంధమే కోరుకున్న విధంగా కుదరడంతో పెళ్లి చేసేసుకున్నారు. అమెరికాలో తెలుగు వాళ్ళు కొన్నిసార్లు తనను చూసినా పెద్దగా రియాక్ట్ అవ్వరన్నారు. పెళ్లి చేసుకొని అమెరికాలో ఉద్యోగం చేస్తూ తల్లిగా, భార్యగా తన పాత్రలను చక్కగా నిర్వహిస్తూనే తెరపై ఛాలెంజింగ్ పాత్రలను పోషించడానికి సిద్ధమైపోయారు. ఆమధ్య కొన్నేళ్ల క్రితం తన స్నేహితుల వాట్సాప్ గ్రూపులో చూసి అమర్ అక్బర్ ఆంటోనీ సినిమా ఆడిషన్ కోసం ఎనిమిది నుండి పన్నెండేళ్ల మధ్య వయసున్న పాప పాత్రకోసం తమ కూతురి ఫోటోలను పంపిన ఆమె దర్శకుడు అడగడంతో సరదాగానే తన కేమియోకు కూడా ఓకే చెప్పేసారు. అలా మెరిసిన లయకు నితిన్ హీరోగా నటిస్తున్న తమ్ముడు సినిమా ద్వారా తెలుగు సినిమా మళ్ళీ రమ్మని ఆహ్వానం పంపండంతో బిజీ అయిపోయారు. మీడియాకు వరుసగా ఇంటర్వ్యూలు ఇస్తూ అప్పటి స్వయంవరం నుండి ఇప్పటి తమ్ముడు సినిమా వరకూ ఆమె ప్రయాణం ఎలా జరిగిందో అన్న విషయాలను తెలుగు సినీ అభిమానులతో పంచుకుంటున్నారు.
ఇంతవరకూ తన కెరీర్ లో చేయని ఒక ప్రభుత్వ ఉద్యోగిగా స్ట్రాంగ్ మైండెడ్ స్త్రీ పాత్రను తమ్ముడు సినిమాలో చేస్తున్నానన్నారు. రెండేళ్ల క్రితం ఒక ఇంటర్వూ చూసి తనకు కాల్ చేసి దర్శకుడు వేణు శ్రీరామ్ అడగడం, తన భర్త డాక్టర్ కావడంతో ఒకవైపు పేషంట్లను చూస్తూనే మధ్యలో వచ్చి తన ఫోటోలను తీసేవారని, తన భర్త సహకారంతో ఫోటోషూట్ చేసి దర్శకుడికి ఫోటోలు పంపడం, వెంటనే దర్శకుడు ఓకే చెప్పడంతో తమ్ముడు సినిమాలో తన పాత్రకు సిద్ధమయ్యానన్నారు. అలా కొన్ని రోజుల తరువాత దర్శకుడిని కలిసిన తరువాత ఆయన "మీరేంటి కథ వినరా" అని అడిగారని, కథ కోసమే ఆసక్తిగా ఎదురుచూస్తున్నాని చెప్పడంతో, అలా ఆ కథ వినగానే తనకెంతో నచ్చిందని, తమ్ముడు సినిమాలో పాత్ర నో చెప్పలేని మంచి పాత్ర తనదన్నారు. దర్శకుడు వేణు శ్రీరామ్ తన సినిమాల్లో స్త్రీ పాత్రలకు ఇచ్చే ప్రాధాన్యత తనకెంతో నచ్చిందని, తమ్ముడు సినిమాలో కూడా అంతే కీలక పాత్రల్లో అయిదుగురిని చూపించారని, ఆ అయిదుగురి స్త్రీ కీలక పాత్రల్లో తనదొక పాత్రని చెప్పుకుంటూ వచ్చారు. ఏ పాత్ర కూడా బలవంతంగా కావాలనే పెట్టినట్లుండదన్నారు. ఆ అయిదుగురు స్త్రీ పాత్రల్లో ఎవరు లేకపోయినా సినిమా అసంపూర్ణంగా ఉండేదన్నారు. అందుకే ఇలాంటి మంచి పాత్రను వదులుకోకూడదనుకున్నానన్నారు.
మొదట్లో సినిమాల్లోకి వచ్చిన తన పాత రోజుల గురించి మాట్లాడుతూ అప్పటికీ ఇప్పటికీ ఎన్నో మార్పులొచ్చాయన్నారు. అప్పట్లో సోలో హీరోయిన్ అనగానే ఓకే చెప్పేసేవాళ్లమని, స్టోరీ నేరేషన్ లాంటివి పెద్దగా ఉండేవి కాదని, పైపైనే తెలుసుకొని చేసేసేవాళ్లమని, ఇప్పుడు అలా కాకుండా హీరోయిన్లు స్టోరీ నేరేషన్ అడగొచ్చని, దర్శకులు కూడా చెప్తున్నారని, అలా అప్పట్లో కథలను ముందుగా తెలుసుకోలేకపోవడం వలన కొన్నిపాత్రల ఎంపికల విషయంలో ఇబ్బందులు కూడా పడ్డానన్నారు. పెర్ఫార్మెన్స్ , డ్రెస్సింగ్, టెక్నీకల్, పెర్ఫెక్షన్ లాంటి చాలా విషయాల్లో అప్పటికీ ఇప్పటికీ చాలా తేడాలున్నాయన్నారు. తమ్ముడు తరువాత శివాజీతో ఒక సినిమాలో నటిస్తున్నానన్నారు.
