As mega Prince Varun Tej turned a year older on Friday, the makers of his next, Matka, dropped the film’s first glimpse– Opening Bracket– and trust us when we say this, it hits the mark. The film is based on a real incident that shook the entire nation and marks Palasa 1978 helmer Karuna Kumar teaming up with Varun Tej for the first time.

Playing out over one minute and 24 seconds, the opening bracket, offering a tantalizing glimpse into the premise of Matka, opens with Varun’s part playing music on a gramophone before it cuts to flashes of a slew of cops approaching a house, while preparations are underway for a game of Kabaddi. There’s a glimpse of actor Ravishankar as a cop who is seen torturing the younger Varun’s part, while there are also flashes of a bureaucrat and a political leader. Naveen Chandra also gets a major presence. While not much is revealed in terms of the plot as the film had gone to floors very recently, it concludes with Varun saying ‘promise’ to someone on the other side of the phone. Later, we get to see a scar on his nose as he pens something down. His transformation for the role is evident in his get up.

Overall, the Opening Bracket is truly fantastic, with the makers ably transporting us to the period gone by with fantastic visuals, top-notch production design, emotional intensity and aided by terrific background score of GV Prakash. Varun’s part has a certain power about him and we can’t wait to see him reel more powerful one-liners. The film promises to be a gritty crime drama about corruption and greed.

Co-starring Meenakshi Chowdary and Norah Fatehi, Matka, to be released in Telugu, Tamil, Kannada, Malayalam, and Hindi languages, also features Kannada Kishore, Ravindra Vijay,Satyam Rajesh, Ravi Shankar, Ajay Ghosh, Roopa Lakshmi and Avinash Kanaparthi. It is a joint production venture between Vyra Entertainments in association with Rajani Talluri’s SRT Entertainments.
