Sakul Sharmaa was a national-level basketball player, winning All-India and National Gold Medals before stepping into cinema. But a career-ending injury left him directionless. With no backup plan, he took up a job in Delhi. A friend secretly enrolled him in a modelling competition. Though he didn’t win, the compliments sparked the idea of pursuing acting—an idea his family initially rejected.
Working a school job by day and training by night, he saved up enough to join an acting institute in Mumbai. After formal training, he spent 3–4 years in theatre but faced typecasting during auditions. “Casting directors only saw me as a terrorist, villain, or foreigner,” he says, frustrated by the industry’s narrow vision.
A short film in which he played a terrorist got him noticed, but he longed for deeper roles. His first big-screen moment came opposite Pooja Hegde in Radhe Shyam, which opened doors to South cinema. We auditioned him nine times for Republic. Sakul initially hesitated to take on the innocent lead role (Aishwarya Rajesh’s brother who goes missing and is later found dead). I convinced him, saying, “Humans are defined by thoughts, not looks. You can do this.” Republic became a turning point and brought more opportunities his way.
His role in Mayasabha didn’t come easily either. Initially, I was unsure if he could handle such an intense grey character, but Sakul’s audition proved otherwise. I requested him, “Prove my judgement wrong”—and Sakul did exactly that through his performance.
With his latest portrayal of Sandeep Basu in Mayasabha gaining recognition, he is now being offered romantic lead roles—a welcome shift from the earlier stereotypes. Sakul reflects on his journey: from sports star to rising actor, marked by resilience and reinvention.

Rohit Satyan’s passion for the performing arts began in school, through several failed attempts to make it on stage. Parallelly, he pursued Mechanical Engineering and performed in stage shows, but his real calling came through acting in short films and college fests.
Despite family expectations to pursue a career in the U.S., Rohit chose the unconventional path of an artist. He took up a job at Amazon to fund acting school—waking up at 4 AM for theatre, working full-time, and dancing at night—all while battling early hair loss that made casting even harder. After years of rejections, he earned his first stage role as Gandhi and eventually got into Drama School Mumbai in 2019. Just before completing the course, COVID hit, derailing his plans. But he kept auditioning.
A key opportunity came through Panchatantram, followed by steady work in short films and web series. A breakthrough came with a lead role in a web series by Kathanika Entertainments and later, acting alongside Rajkummar Rao and Kajal Aggarwal.
My partner Kiran identified Rohit and called him to audition for Vakada Vijaya in Mayasabha. Just the look of him and the body language made it an instant call for us. He called it the role he’d been waiting for—and nailed it with spectacular authenticity.
Rohit stands as a symbol of perseverance—an actor who turned every setback into fuel. He dreams of roles that explore and expand the inner depths of the artist in him.

సకుల్ శర్మా ఒక నేషనల్ లెవల్ బాస్కెట్‌బాల్ ప్లేయర్. పగటి పూట స్కూల్లో జాబ్, రాత్రిళ్ళు యాక్టింగ్ ట్రైనింగ్—ఇలా డబ్బులు పొదుపు చేసి ముంబయ్ లోని ఒక acting institute లో చేరాడు. ట్రైనింగ్ తర్వాత 3-4 ఏళ్లపాటు theatre చేశాడు. కానీ auditions లో అతన్ని typecasting చేసేవారు—"నీవు టెర్రరిస్టు, విలన్ లేదా ఫారెనర్ పాత్రలకే సెట్ అవుతావు" అనే తత్వంతో.
ఒక షార్ట్‌ఫిల్మ్‌లో టెర్రరిస్ట్ పాత్రలో నటించాడు, అది కొంతమంది దృష్టిని ఆకర్షించింది. కానీ అతనికి లోతైన పాత్రలంటే ఇష్టం. మొదటి big-screen moment "రాధే శ్యామ్" సినిమాలో పూజా హెగ్డే పక్కన నటించడం. అది సౌత్ సినిమాకు గేట్వే అయ్యింది. Republic కోసం మేము అతన్ని తొమ్మిది సార్లు audition చేశాం. అదొక ఎన్విరాన్మెంటల్ కన్సర్న్ ఉన్న ఒక సైంటిస్ట్ పాత్ర. "నన్నెవరు అమాయకుడిగా నమ్ముతారు?" అనే డౌట్ తనకు బలంగా ఉండేది. నేను అతనితో,
“మనిషిని డిఫైన్ చేసేది లుక్స్ కాదు, ఆలోచనలు. నీవు చేయగలవు.” అని కన్విన్స్ చేసాను.
Republic అతని కెరీర్ లో ఒక మంచి టర్నింగ్ పాయింట్ అయ్యింది.
Mayasabha పాత్ర కూడా అంత ఈజీగా ఏమీ రాలేదు. ఇప్పుడు నా డౌట్—"సకుల్ ఇంతటీ intense grey character ని మేనేజ్ చేయగలడా?" అని. కానీ అతని ఆడిషన్ చూస్తే… నా ఊహ తప్పు అని నిరూపించాడు. ఆడిషన్ చేసే ముందు “నా జడ్జ్మెంట్ తప్పు అని నిరూపించు” అన్నాను – అతను నిరూపించాడు.
Mayasabha లో సందీప్ బసు పాత్రకు మంచి గుర్తింపు రావడంతో, ఇప్పుడతనికి romantic lead roles కూడా వస్తున్నాయి. టైప్‌కాస్ట్ అయిన గతం నుంచి ఇది మంచి మార్పు. స్పోర్ట్స్ స్టార్ నుంచి రైజింగ్ యాక్టర్ దిశగా అతని ప్రయాణం resilience, reinvention తో నిండినది.

రోహిత్ సత్యన్ కి నటన మీద ఆసక్తి స్కూల్ నుంచే మొదలైంది—మొదటి కొన్ని ప్రయత్నాలు ఫెయిలయ్యాయి. మెకానికల్ ఇంజినీరింగ్ చదువుతూ, stage shows లో పాల్గొనేవాడు. కానీ అసలైన పిలుపు మాత్రం college fests & short films ద్వారానే వచ్చింది.
తన ఫ్యామిలీ U.S లో సెటిల్ అవ్వాలని ఆశపడుతుంటే, Rohit మాత్రం arts వైపు మళ్లాడు. Amazon లో జాబ్ తీసుకుని, acting school కోసం డబ్బులు పొదుపు చేసాడు.
ఉదయాన్నే 4 గంటలకు లేచి theatre practice, తర్వాత ఫుల్ టైం జాబ్, రాత్రి డాన్స్ క్లాసులు—ఇలా సాగింది అతని డే. Early hair loss వల్ల చాలా కాస్టింగ్ అవకాసాలు కోల్పోయాడు.
అనేక రిజెక్షన్స్ తర్వాత, Gandhi పాత్రతో స్టేజ్‌పై తొలి బ్రేక్ వచ్చింది. 2019లో Drama School Mumbai చేరాడు. కానీ కోర్సు ముగిసేలోపు COVID వచ్చి ప్లాన్లు మొత్తం గల్లంతయ్యాయి. అయినా auditions ఆపలేదు.
Panchatantram ద్వారా మంచి అవకాశం వచ్చింది. తరువాత కొన్ని short films మరియు web series లు వచ్చాయి. నిజమైన breakthrough వచ్చింది ఒక lead role ద్వారా (Kathanika Entertainments). తర్వాత Rajkummar Rao, Kajal Aggarwalలతో కలిసి నటించే ఛాన్స్ వచ్చింది.

రోహిత్ perseverance కి సింబల్. setbacks ని fuel గా మార్చుకున్న యాక్టర్. తనలోని ఆర్టిస్ట్ లోతులు బయటకు తెచ్చే పాత్రల కోసం ఎదురుచూస్తున్నాడు.
రోహిత్‌కు ఇంకా ఎన్నో మెమరబుల్ పాత్రలు, సుదీర్ఘ విజయవంతమైన కెరీర్ రావాలని ఆశిస్తున్నాం.
