“Interviews on Idlebrain Sparked My Obsession with Cinema” – Praveena Paruchuri

As part of promotions for the film Kothapallilo Okapudu, director-producer **Praveena Paruchuri** and lead actor Manoj Chandra gave an interview to Idlebrain’s Jeevi. During the chat, Praveena shared insights into her journey from *Care of Kancharapalem* to Kothapallilo Okapudu, and the struggles along the way.
Currently working as a cardiologist in the U.S., she revealed that she used her personal earnings to produce *Kothapallilo Okapudu*. She credited the Idlebrain website as the origin of her passion for cinema. It was the interviews on the site that captivated her so much that she preferred reading them over her college textbooks. One such interview with Aparna Malladi inspired her to meet the filmmaker, which eventually led to Care of Kancharapalem.
Praveena mentioned that she entered medical school with a deep desire to produce films, but didn’t want to use her parents’ hard-earned money for her cinematic dreams, which she likened to a gamble. Her first film Care of Kancharapalem was financed using her medical school stipend. Due to casting difficulties, she even acted in a small role in that film.
She spoke about her deep love for Telugu cinema since childhood, saying that films were her only friends during a lonely upbringing. From Chiranjeevi to Mahesh Babu, she watched every movie religiously and especially loved the humor, songs, and dance in Telugu films. Even while growing up in America, her parents raised her with strong Telugu roots - dressing her in bindis and ribbons, and sending her to school with pulihora just like in Vijayawada.
Though she admits to initially fearing that OTT platforms would impact theatrical viewing, she strongly believes that only in theatres can audiences truly enjoy cinema. She said even a small film like Care of Kancharapalem or a grand epic like Kalki involves immense behind-the-scenes effort, and it deserves the big screen experience. She likened OTT's rise to the British East India Company's invasion.
Actor Manoj Chandra shared that he traveled the world in pursuit of acting roles. During the COVID era, when there was a casting call for an Indian character in Christmas in Miami, he even went to Nigeria. The film featured African and Hollywood actors and was a success in Nigeria, further igniting his passion for cinema.
After that, he acted in a short film titled Men in Blue, which caught the attention of Praveena Paruchuri and led to his role in Kothapallilo Okapudu. He balanced a software job for 10 years while continuing to pursue acting. He reflected on how all people have both good and bad within them, just like the flavors of Ugadi pachadi, and that circumstances reveal which side surfaces.
In the film, he plays a character who is a good-hearted person at the core but appears like a petty loser on the outside. To prepare for the role, he attended several workshops in New York, rigorously training for three months. He recalled exercises where 40 actors were placed in a room, five were picked for the stage, and had to improvise comedy for 20 minutes based on a random word a challenge that honed his instincts.
He concluded by saying that while working with foreign actors was enriching, acting in Telugu—his mother tongue—made his work in Kothapallilo Okapudu even more meaningful and seamless.

'కొత్తపల్లిలో ఒకప్పుడు' ప్రమోషన్లలో భాగంగా ఆ సినిమా దర్శక నిర్మాత ప్రవీణ పరుచూరి, హీరో మనోజ్ చంద్ర ఐడిల్ బ్రెయిన్ జీవికి ఇంటర్వ్యూ ఇచ్చారు. ప్రవీణ మాట్లాడుతూ 'కేరాఫ్ కంచరపాలెం' సినిమా నుండి 'కొత్తపల్లిలో ఒకప్పుడు' వరకూ ఆమె ప్రయాణంలో పడ్డ కష్టాలన్నింటినీ ఆమె జీవితో పంచుకున్నారు. ప్రస్తుతం అమెరికాలో వైద్య వృత్తిలో 'కార్డియాలజిస్ట్' గా పనిచేస్తున్నానని, ఆ సంపాదనతోనే 'కొత్తపల్లిలో ఒకప్పుడు' సినిమాను నిర్మించానన్నారు. తన సినీ ప్రయాణానికి బీజం వేసిందే ఐడిల్ బ్రెయిన్ వెబ్సైట్ అని, ఆ వెబ్సైట్ లో ఇంటర్వ్యూలు చదివిన తరువాతనే కాలేజీ పుస్తకాలు చదివేదానినన్నారు. అలా ఇంటర్వ్యూలు చదివే క్రమంలో ఒకరోజు ఐడిల్ బ్రెయిన్ వెబ్సైట్ లో వచ్చిన అపర్ణ మల్లాది గారి ఇంటర్వ్యూ చదివిన తరువాత, ఆమెను కలవడం జరిగిందనీ, ఆ ప్రయాణంలో 'కేరాఫ్ కంచరపాలెం' సినిమా ప్రారంభమైందన్నారు. సినిమాలు నిర్మించాలన్న తపనతోనే మెడికల్ స్కూల్ కు వెళ్లానన్నారు. సినిమాలు తీయడమన్నది ఒక రకమైన గ్యాంబ్లింగ్ కాబట్టి, తమ తల్లితండ్రుల కష్టార్జితానాన్ని తన సినిమా కోసం ఉపయోగించుకోవడం తనకిష్టంలేదన్నారు. తన మొదటి సినిమా 'కేరాఫ్ కంచరపాలెం' కూడా మెడికల్ స్కూల్ లో చదువుతున్నప్పుడు అందులో వచ్చిన స్టైపెండ్ తోనే నిర్మించడం జరిగిందన్నారు. ఆ సమయంలో వేరే నటి కుదరకపోవడంతో అనుకోకుండానే ఆ సినిమాలో చిన్న పాత్ర కూడా వేయాల్సివచ్చిందన్నారు. చిన్నప్పటి నుండీ తనకు తెలుగు సినిమాలంటే ప్రాణమని, తన బాల్యంలో ఒంటరితనాన్ని పోగొట్టడంలో సినిమాలే తనకు స్నేహితులయ్యాయన్నారు. ఆ క్రమంలో చిరంజీవి గారి నుండి మహేష్ బాబు గారి వరకూ ప్రతీ సినిమా చూసేదానినని, మన తెలుగు సినిమాల్లో ఉండే హాస్యం, పాటలు, డాన్స్ అంటే తనకెంతో ఇష్టమన్నారు. అమెరికాలో ఉన్నా పిలకలు, బొట్టు, రిబ్బన్లు ధరించి, స్కూల్ కి పులిహోర పంపి విజయవాడలో ఉన్నట్టే తమ తల్లితండ్రులు తనను పెంచారన్నారు. OTT తో థియేటర్లలో సినిమా ప్రభావం తగ్గుతుందన్న భయం తనకు కూడా ఉందని, తన 'కేరాఫ్ కంచర పాలెం' లాంటి చిన్న సినిమా నుండి 'కల్కి' లాంటి పెద్ద సినిమా వరకూ తెర వెనుక ఎందరి కష్టమో దాగుంటుందని, థియేటర్లో చూస్తేనే సినిమా మజా ఉంటుందన్నారు. 'బ్రిటీష్ ఈస్ట్ ఇండియా కంపెనీ' మాదిరే OTT ఆక్రమణ జరుగుతుందన్నారు.
హీరో మనోజ్ చంద్ర మాట్లాడుతూ సినిమాలో నటించడం కోసం ప్రపంచం మొత్తం తిరిగినానని, కోవిడ్ టైం లో 'క్రిస్మస్ ఇన్ మియామీ' సినిమా కోసం కాస్టింగ్ కాల్ పడితే, ఇండియన్ కేరక్టర్ కోసం నైజీరియా దేశం కూడా వెళ్లానన్నారు. ఆ సినిమాలో ఒక ఆఫ్రికన్ స్టార్ తో పాటూ హాలీవుడ్ నటులు కూడా నటించారని, ఆ సినిమా నైజీరియాలో బాగా ఆడిందన్నారు. దాంతో క్రాఫ్ట్స్ మీద శ్రద్ధ ఇంకా పెరిగిందన్నారు. ఆ సినిమా తరువాత 'మెన్ ఇన్ బ్లూ' అనే షార్ట్ ఫిల్మ్ ఒకటి నటించడంతో, ఆ షార్ట్ ఫిల్మ్ చూసిన ప్రవీణ గారి ద్వారా 'కొత్తపల్లిలో ఒకప్పుడు' సినిమాకు అవకాశం వచ్చిందన్నారు. పదేళ్లుగా సాఫ్ట్వేర్ ఉద్యోగం చేస్తూనే, మరోవైపు సినిమాల వైపు ప్రయత్నాలు చేస్తూనే ఉన్నానన్నారు. అందరిలోనూ మంచీ చెడులూ ఉగాది పచ్చడిలాగే ఉంటాయని, ఆయా అవసరాలకు, అవకాశాలకు అనుగుణంగానే ఏది మంచో ఏది చెడో అన్నది బయటపడుతుందన్నారు. 'కొత్తపల్లిలో ఒకప్పుడు' సినిమాలో తన పాత్ర కూడా అలాగే ఉంటుందని, మనసు లోపల చాలా మంచోడైనా, బయటకు మాత్రం ఒక చిల్లర వెధవలా కనిపిస్తాడన్నారు. ఆ పాత్ర కోసం న్యూయార్క్ లో చాలా వర్క్ షాప్స్ కు హాజరై, మూడు నెలల పాటూ పట్టుదలతో ఎంతో నేర్చుకున్నానన్నారు. అక్కడ నడిచే జామ్స్ లో నలభై మందిని ఒక గదిలో పెట్టి, అందులో ఓ అయిదుగురిని స్టేజ్ మీదకు తీసుకొని, ఒక పదం ఇచ్చి, ఇరవై నిముషాలు పాటూ ఆ పదం ఆధారంగా కామెడీ చేసి చూపించాలన్నారు. అప్పటికప్పుడు అల్లుకొని నటించాలన్నారు. అక్కడ విదేశీ నటులతో పనిచేయడం వలన, ఇక్కడకు వచ్చేసరికి తెలుగు తన మాతృ భాష అవ్వడంతో 'కొత్తపల్లిలో ఒకప్పుడు' సినిమాకు పనిచేయడం ఇంకా కాస్త సులువు అయిందన్నారు.
