Following the blockbuster success of Sankrantiki Vasthunnam, another promising film is on the way under the prestigious banner of Sri Venkateswara Creations – the upcoming film Thammudu starring Nithiin. Produced by Dil Raju and Shirish, and directed by Sriram Venu, the film also stars Varsha Bollamma and Sapthami Gowda in key roles. Notably, actress Laya is making her comeback to Tollywood through this film. Thammudu is set for a grand worldwide theatrical release on July 4. Speaking on this occasion, Laya shared her experiences playing the role of Jhansi Kiranmayee and highlighted some key aspects of the movie.

"I came to India in February 2023 and gave a few interviews to YouTube channels. After watching those interviews, the Thammudu movie team contacted me in June. When I sent them a few photos, they felt I didn’t quite fit the character and asked for a new photoshoot. After I sent the new pictures, I was selected. By then, I already knew the story of Thammudu and felt it was the right film for my re-entry. They told me the character needed to look a bit heavier, so I gained weight by eating sweets. I stayed in India for several months for the shoot."

"I play Jhansi Kiranmayee, an officer who is strict and responsible, balancing her family life with her professional duties. I play the sister of the hero, Nithiin. We shot many scenes in the forest, and someone or the other would get hurt daily. People often say a film shoot feels like a picnic, but for us, it was far from it - we had to work hard. But everyone was united and gave it their all, happy with how well the film was shaping up. No one took breaks or left the set. We worked with total dedication."

"Working with Nithiin was a joy. Even though he’s a star hero, he was like a little kid on set, mixing with everyone. His performance in this movie will show a more mature side of him. He handled very difficult scenes with ease, thanks to the preparation he put in. The title Thammudu suits this film perfectly, although it has no similarity to Pawan Kalyan’s movie of the same name."

"Even though I’ve acted in many movies before, a lot has changed now. Earlier, promotions mostly revolved around audio functions, theatre visits, and 100-day celebrations. Now, there are so many promotional events, and large crowds attend them. Even when I was a heroine, I kept things simple. Audiences saw me as Meena in Preminchu or Ratnamala in Missamma, not as a star heroine. So now, playing a character artist feels natural - I don’t feel any difference on set."

"When I decided to come to India for this movie, I left my job in the US. Opportunities don’t come when we ask for them - so I didn’t want to miss this one. The character Jhansi Kiranmayee doesn’t talk much, but when she does, her words are powerful. Director Sriram Venu told me she is a strong woman who does what she believes in, without fear. I portrayed the role exactly as he envisioned. Along with her strictness, the character also shows emotion and affection."

"I’ll never forget the experience of shooting in the forest. We suffered many injuries - some scenes were shot barefoot, and stones hurt our feet. Not just me, even the director and other team members fell sick. Initially, I didn’t have combination scenes with Nithiin, but we later shot together. Director Sriram Venu was very strict on set. I got to see the film’s content while dubbing - it’s turned out extremely well and leaves a strong impact."

"Throughout my career, I mostly played simple girl-next-door roles. But in Thammudu, I got to play a strong woman. Every character in this film has importance - no one is just there for the sake of it. The brother-sister sentiment in this story is truly unique and unlike anything you’ve seen before."

"When I came into films earlier, it was all unplanned. But now I’ve returned with the desire to really make a mark. I want to take on meaningful roles - whether it’s a sister or a mother, I’m open to anything. But I want the audience to remember my character when they leave the theatre. Even in the movies where I was the heroine, I’ve played mothers too - back then, I was just 22. If I get characters that are the driving force of the story, I’ll definitely take them up. I'm not a US artist - I’m a Hyderabad local. When I have movies, I’ll be based here. Currently, I’m working on a film with Shivaji and haven’t signed any other projects yet."

"సంక్రాంతికి వస్తున్నాం" బ్లాక్ బస్టర్ హిట్ తర్వాత ప్రముఖ నిర్మాణ సంస్థ శ్రీ వెంకటేశ్వర క్రియేషన్స్ నిర్మాణంలో వస్తున్న మరో సూపర్ హిట్ మూవీ "తమ్ముడు". దిల్ రాజు, శిరీష్ నిర్మిస్తున్న ఈ చిత్రానికి శ్రీరామ్ వేణు దర్శకత్వం వహిస్తున్నారు. వర్ష బొల్లమ్మ, సప్తమి గౌడ కీలక పాత్రలు పోషిస్తున్నారు. ఈ చిత్రంతో టాలీవుడ్ లోకి రీ ఎంట్రీ ఇస్తున్నారు నటి లయ. "తమ్ముడు" సినిమా జూలై 4న వరల్డ్ వైడ్ గా గ్రాండ్ థియేట్రికల్ రిలీజ్ కు రాబోతోంది. ఈ నేపథ్యంలో మూవీ హైలైట్స్ తో పాటు ఝాన్సీ కిరణ్మయి క్యారెక్టర్ లో నటించిన తన ఎక్సిపీరియన్స్ తెలిపారు నటి లయ.

- నేను 2023 ఫిబ్రవరిలో ఇండియాకు వచ్చాను. ఇక్కడ కొన్ని యూట్యూబ్ ఛానెల్స్ కు ఇంటర్వ్యూస్ ఇచ్చాను. ఆ ఇంటర్వ్యూస్ చూసి జూన్ లో "తమ్ముడు" మూవీ టీమ్ నుంచి కాల్ వచ్చింది. నేను తీసుకున్న కొన్ని ఫొటోస్ పంపిస్తే, వాటిలో ఈ క్యారెక్టర్ కు సెట్ అయ్యేలా కనిపించలేదు. దాంతో మళ్లీ ఫొటోషూట్ చేసి పంపమన్నారు. ఆ ఫొటోస్ చూసి నన్ను సెలెక్ట్ చేసుకున్నారు. అప్పటికి లైన్ గా "తమ్ముడు" కథ తెలుసు. నా రీ ఎంట్రీకి ఇది సరైన సినిమా అనిపించింది. క్యారెక్టర్ కోసం కొంచెం లావు కావాలని చెప్పారు. స్వీట్స్ తిని బరువు పెరిగాను. ఈ మూవీ కోసం కొన్ని నెలల పాటు ఇక్కడే ఉన్నాను.

"తమ్ముడు" మూవీలో ఝాన్సీ కిరణ్మయి అనే క్యారెక్టర్ లో నటించాను. తనొక ఆఫీసర్. స్ట్రిక్ట్ గా ఉంటుంది. కుటుంబాన్ని చూసుకుంటూనే, ఆఫీసర్ గా నా బాధ్యతలు నిర్వర్తిస్తుంటాను. హీరో నితిన్ కు సోదరి పాత్ర నాది. ఈ చిత్రం కోసం అడవిలో షూటింగ్ చేశాం. రోజూ యూనిట్ లో ఎవరో ఒకరికి గాయాలు అయ్యేవి. షూటింగ్ పిక్నిక్ లా చేశామని చెబుతుంటారు. కానీ మేము పిక్నిక్ లా చేయలేదు. కష్టపడాల్సి వచ్చింది. మూవీ బాగా వస్తుందనే సంతోషంలో అంతా యూనిటీగా పనిచేశాం. ఈ సినిమా షూటింగ్ కాదని ఎవరూ ఎక్కడికీ వెళ్లలేదు. చాలా డెడికేటెడ్ గా వర్క్ చేశాం.

నితిన్ తో వర్క్ చేయడం చాలా హ్యాపీగా అనిపించింది. తను స్టార్ హీరో అయినా చిన్న పిల్లాడిలా మా అందరితో కలిసిపోయారు. పర్ ఫార్మెన్స్ పరంగా చూస్తే ఈ సినిమాలో నితిన్ చాలా మెచ్యూర్డ్ గా కనిపిస్తాడు. చాలా కష్టమైన సీన్స్ కూడా ఈజీగా చేశాడు. సీన్స్ కోసం చేసిన ప్రిపరేషన్ వల్లే అంత సులువుగా నటించగలిగారు. తమ్ముడు అనే టైటిల్ ఈ సినిమాకు యాప్ట్. మీరు సినిమా చూశాక చెబుతారు. పవన్ కల్యాణ్ గారి తమ్ముడు మూవీకి ఈ చిత్రానికి పోలిక లేదు.

నేను గతంలో సినిమాల్లో నటించినప్పటికి ఇప్పటికి చాలా మార్పులు వచ్చాయి. ప్రమోషన్ విషయం తీసుకుంటే అప్పుడు ఆడియో ఫంక్షన్, థియేటర్ విజిటింగ్, 100 డేస్ ఫంక్షన్ ఉండేది. ఇప్పుడు చాలా ఈవెంట్స్ చేస్తున్నారు. తమ్ముడు మూవీకి చేసిన ఈవెంట్స్ కు పెద్ద సంఖ్యలో ప్రేక్షకులు వస్తున్నారు. నేను హీరోయిన్ గా నటించినప్పుడు కూడా సింపుల్ గానే ఉన్నాను. ఒక స్టార్ హీరోయిన్ గా కాకుండా ప్రేమించులో మీనాగా, మిస్సమ్మలో రత్నమాలగానే ప్రేక్షకులు నన్ను చూశారు. అందుకే ఇప్పుడు క్యారెక్టర్ ఆర్టిస్టుగా చేస్తున్నప్పుడు సెట్ లో ఆ తేడా తెలియడం లేదు.

ఈ సినిమా కోసం ఇండియా రావాలనుకున్నప్పుడే అక్కడ యూఎస్ లో జాబ్ మానేశాను. అవకాశాలు కోరుకున్నప్పుడు రావు. అందుకే ఇండస్ట్రీలో వచ్చిన అవకాశం వదులుకోకూడదని వచ్చేశా. ఝాన్సీ కిరణ్మయి క్యారెక్టర్ ఎక్కువగా మాట్లాడదు. కానీ మాట్లాడినప్పుడు చాలా పవర్ ఫుల్ గా చెబుతుంది. ఈ క్యారెక్టర్ గురించి దర్శకుడు శ్రీరామ్ వేణు గారు చెప్పినప్పుడు ఝాన్సీ కిరణ్మయి స్ట్రాంగ్ వుమెన్, తను అనుకున్నది చేస్తుంది. ఏది ఏమైనా భయపడదు అని చెప్పారు. ఆయన చెప్పినట్లే నటించాను. ఈ క్యారెక్టర్ లో ఆ స్ట్రిక్ట్ నెస్ తో పాటు ఎమోషన్, అఫెక్షన్ కూడా ఉంటాయి.

అడవిలో షూటింగ్ చేసిన ఎక్సిపీరియన్స్ మర్చిపోలేం. చాలా దెబ్బలు తగిలాయి. కొన్ని సీన్స్ లో చెప్పులు వేసుకోలేదు. రాళ్లు కాళ్లకు తగిలేవి. నేనే కాదు టీమ్ లో డైరెక్టర్ గారితో సహా సిక్ అయ్యాం. నితిన్ గారితో నాకు ఫస్ట్ కొన్ని రోజులు కాంబినేషన్ సీన్స్ లేవు. ఆ తర్వాత కలిసి చేశాం. డైరెక్టర్ శ్రీరామ్ వేణు గారు సెట్ లో చాలా స్ట్రిక్ట్ గా ఉండేవారు. నేను డబ్బింగ్ చెప్పినంత వరకు మూవీ కంటెంట్ చూశాను. చాలా బాగా, ఇంపాక్ట్ ఫుల్ గా వచ్చింది.

నా కెరీర్ లో ఇప్పటిదాకా ఒక సాధారణ అమ్మాయి పాత్రల్లోనే నటించాను. తమ్ముడు మూవీలో మాత్రం స్ట్రాంగ్ వుమెన్ గా నటించే అవకాశం దక్కింది. ఈ కథలో ప్రతి పాత్రకు ఓ ఇంపార్టెన్స్ ఉంటుంది. ఎవరూ ఊరికే కనిపించరు. బ్రదర్ అండ్ సిస్టర్ సెంటిమెంట్ పూర్తిగా భిన్నంగా ఉంటుంది.

నేను హీరోయిన్ గా చేసినప్పుడు అనుకోకుండా ఇక్కడికి వచ్చాను. ఇప్పుడు చిత్ర పరిశ్రమలో మనకంటూ ఏదో సాధించాలనే తపనతో తిరిగి వచ్చాను. కథలో ప్రాధాన్యమున్న పాత్రల్లో నటించాలని అనుకుంటున్నా. ఆ పాత్ర సిస్టర్ అయినా, మదర్ అయినా చేస్తాను. కానీ థియేటర్ నుంచి బయటకు వచ్చేప్పుడు ఆడియెన్స్ కు నా క్యారెక్టర్ గుర్తుండాలి. నేను హీరోయిన్ గా చేసిన చిత్రాల్లోనూ మదర్ గా కనిపించినవి ఉన్నాయి. అప్పుడు నా వయసు 22 ఏళ్లు. కథకు డ్రైవింగ్ ఫోర్స్ లాంటి క్యారెక్టర్స్ వస్తే తప్పకుండా నటిస్తా. నేను యూఎస్ ఆర్టిస్టును కాదు హైదరాబాద్ లోకల్ ఆర్టిస్టునే. మూవీస్ ఉన్నప్పుడు ఇక్కడే ఉంటా. ప్రస్తుతం శివాజీ గారితో ఒక సినిమా చేస్తున్నాను. ఇంకే ప్రాజెక్ట్స్ అంగీకరించలేదు.
