Different Perspective - Pokiri

What is Different Perspective?
We do have a tendency to get carried away by the success of a film and rarely look deep down into it to justify the ‘praises’ heaped on the film as well as on director. Should success blind our ‘thinking’ and shouldn’t we study its shortcomings as well. Agreed audience appreciation is all too important but will it not be a crime to overlook its flaws. This is just an attempt to pause for `moment’ and analyze the structuring of the `plot’ and how it would have been a notable effort if director had adhered to few rules of  Filmmaking grammar.

It’s a “Different Perspective’ of popular Telugu films by a “Friendly Viewer’.

Director Puri Jagannath picked a ‘good’ plot and delivered slick actioner with well-mounted songs but left few gaping holes in his script. Puri himself claims to have been inspired by Govind Nihalani’s classic “Drohakaal” for his ‘plot’ but failed to make a convincing film out of an interesting storyline. The basic aim of planting protoganist as a ‘mole’ in Prakash’s Raj’s camp is to eliminate his team members gradually, goes awry. Barring the climax, protoganist doesn’t even kill one member of Prakash Raj’s gang rather eliminates all his business rivals to leave the field open for Dubai-based don to run his business. Another flaw was heroine’s acceptance of protoganist's love despite knowing that he is a dreaded killer (in the train episode she claims that she ‘fears’ protagonist more than the thugs who molested her.(She approves his love with this contradiction in mind).

Director makes him a police officer to justify the killings but even police cannot go on rampage just like in the film. If police are planting ‘mole’ they know it’s meant for a specific purpose, particularly to weaken the ‘gang concerned’. Our protagonist doesn’t even pass on information about the ‘gang’ activities to his dept but just keeps killing all thugs without remorse. If we assume that he is an `encounter specialist’ but even then he will be given a specific list of criminals who have notorious criminal records and operation would be done with utmost secrecy since police department is answerable to Human Rights commission. In civil society punishment should be proportionate to the crime committed but our protagonist awards ‘death penalty’ to all the thugs without even giving it a thought. On the other hand, neither the police dept nor the media sets up a mission to unravel the 'mystery' behind numerous killings though they discuss it in press briefings and end up 'criticising' each other and let go the culprit.

Prakash Raj should be have been an happy man since the mole in his gang has actually eliminated all his rivals instead he rushes to kill Nasser `unnecessarily’ as soon as he comes to know about it. Instead he should have thanked Nasser for giving him a policeman who can kill more mercilessly than his dreaded lieutenants.

Illeana looks a confused lover since she is unable to discard or reform the protagonist despite knowing his ‘killing ways’ but still loves him. Is director unfortunately suggesting that timid girls should get hooked to brave guys even if they are criminals? (hope soft-girls will agree with me). To make her decision convincing, director should have given her enough time to think and she should have tried to mend his ways before approving his love after finding some change in him but it wasn’t the case. Regretably few flaws remained untouched in this record-breaking hit.
