Different Perspective - Lakshmi

What is Different Perspective?
We do have a tendency to get carried away by the success of a film and rarely look deep down into it to justify the ‘praises’ heaped on the film as well as on director. Should success blind our ‘thinking’ and shouldn’t we study its shortcomings as well. Agreed audience appreciation is all too important but will it not be a crime to overlook its flaws. This is just an attempt to pause for `moment’ and analyze the structuring of the `plot’ and how it would have been a notable effort if director had adhered to few rules of  Filmmaking grammar.

It’s a “Different Perspective’ of popular films by a “Friendly Viewer’.

On one hand, director Vinayak would have been happy with the success but on the other hand he should be feeling bad in his heart of his hearts for dishing out a insipid film. Neither it’s a convincing family drama nor a slick actioner since the conflict between the ‘siblings" is quite unrealistic and the baddy behaves more like a pimp to dilute the confrontation angle. Obviously umpteen sensible viewers would have whacked their ‘brains’ to dig out at least one valid reason in the script which pleased the audience excluding casting. Unfortunately, director begins on a wrong note by making the protagonist to bash up and blame the elder brother of a rogue student? But will the protoganist take the blame for the unruly and insensitive behavior of his two brothers? Director fails to set right this `contradiction’ in the plot and unfortunately relies on a spine-less baddy to take on the protagonist face-to-face which goes awry. Protagonist couldn’t drive sense into the minds of his siblings while he was the managing director so his re-joining the company as a peon is bound to go in vain (for moronic melodrama). Young maker should have chosen a contemporary and logical theme than pushing surging Telugu cinema few decades backwards with an outdated concept. Luck may not favor him next time around if he comes up with another regressive theme since you cannot fool anyone ‘twice’. Agreed, move down.

Director fails to properly establish the relationship between the protagonist and his two brothers since there is no much interaction between them. Protagonist prefers to impose ideas on his siblings ( tells them to look after family business) instead of seeking their opinion on their career at least `once’. When govt. is restraining teachers from beating kids and psychologists cautioning parents against punishment, our protagonist thrashes his grown up brothers mercilessly with a belt. The ideal conflict between the siblings would have been logical difference of opinion over certain issues reflecting the changing attitudes of people between present and previous generations. But director prefers ‘thrashing’ (naa debbalu walla onttikanna walla manasulaku thagilinantunai) to drive wedge between siblings but do give some more credence to the ‘split’ he brings in the ‘sub-plot’ of orphan protagonist. Protagonist who couldn’t reform his brothers as MD re-joins the company as a peon. He quotes labor laws though as an MD he doesn’t come under its purview. If he stills wants, he can join only as a ‘casual laborer’ since his previous management experience doesn’t count but still needs the approval of management. Director overlooks all these logical factors since his only intention to derive sympathy for his ‘protagonist’ as the peon in the same factory. (Protagonist could have saved the company from staying outside as he doesn’t do anything special as a peon rather than bearing unnecessary insults). After revealing the story of his lover (Nayantara), protagonist looks at Charmy and she agrees to marry some one else. He possesses the rare power of judging the intentions of a person by just watching his eyes but he doesn’t discourage Charmy despite knowing her intentions towards him (did he deceive her). Protagonist being a self-reliant man shouldn’t have returned to the mansion since it dilutes his idealism.

With plot revolving around sibling rivalry, director should have worked hard on the characters of two brothers but he disappoints by sketching ill-defined roles. They behave more like fools and also don’t have any set goals. They begin a hotel just because someone advised them and also involve bar girls to get beaten up. Their silly decisions even in office can put management graduates to shame. They don’t even repent for their acts but all of a sudden start liking the protagonist( just because he saved their lifes-how sad).

Shinde neither uses his brawn nor brains to unsettle the protagonist rather indulges in cheap tricks (his son even calls him a pimp). Charmy looks to be an educated girl but she is unable to gauge the ‘indifference’ of the protagonist towards her feelings. Director makes mockery of psychiatrists In Calcutta, a psychiatrist advises Pradeep to kill the protagonist who is tormenting a rapist and killer instead of curing the patient through psychoanalysis and medication.
