Different Perspective - Don
By Friendly Viewer

What is Different Perspective?
We do have a tendency to get carried away by the success of a film and rarely look deep down into it to justify the ‘praises’ heaped on the film as well as on director. Should success blind our ‘thinking’ and shouldn’t we study its shortcomings as well. Agreed audience appreciation is all too important but will it not be a crime to overlook its flaws. This is just an attempt to pause for `moment’ and analyze the structuring of the `plot’ and how it would have been a notable effort if director had adhered to few rules of  Filmmaking grammar.

It’s a “Different Perspective’ of popular films by a “Friendly Viewer’.

Director Farhan Akhtar who has been described as a 'promising talent' by ace maker Maniratnam disappoints with his latest flick "Don". Director fails to deliver a notable film that would eclipse the original but unnecessarily tampers with a 'basic theme' to annoy the fans of legendary Salim-Javed. With this flawed remake, it has been proved that writers-duo were ahead of their times and their perfect 'cause-and-effect' screen-order still counts and more engrossing than latest narrrative formats. Director did cut-short few 'twists’ in the script but he couldn't retain the 'soul' of the 70's superhit but just delivers a ‘glossy’ film. Even Javed saab would have felt that his son and talented director would surpass their work but he would have also been dejected with the final product which goes pale in comparison themetically.

Director Farhan claimed that he was fascinated with “Don’ from his child hood but his fascination proved costly. Despite his filmmaking knowledge, his father stands tall before him in penning a futuristic script, which no one can tamper with. The basic difference between two films lies in the `conceptualization’ of the `protagonist’. If father balanced the ‘meanness’ of one Amitabh with `idealism’ of another Amitabh but by cutting short the footage of second protagonist, Farhan delivers a dark film. It looks like Farhan was more fascinated with the ‘negative shades’ of the protagonist than the film as such since he wasted more footage on ‘glorifying’ the deeds of a ruthless protagonist and was definitely biased. Even his resolution confirms our argument. Another big contradiction regarding the theme is –as we all know that Salim-Javed’s ‘protoganist’ was an innocent and good-hearted Amitabh who steps into the shoes of a suave Don and how he finally triumphs over evil. But Farhan's thinking runs ‘contrary’ to this as he allows inhuman Don to survive by even sacrificing gullible and upright Shah Rukh. Is he suggesting that there is no place for ‘good’ and only evil thinking can succeed in this present dog-eat-dog world. If that is a reality, we need to throw out all our mythologicals and fairy tales since they hailed 'goodness' as a greatest virtue(excuse me if I am sounding idealistic since Indian films are supposed to be so.)

Coming to other characters he couldn’t add few significant characters rather he just replaced them with new actors. Unfortunately Kareena Kapoor couldn’t match the ‘sensuousness’ of legendary Helen while Priyanka Chopra was many notches below glamorous diva Zeenat. Even Arjun Ramphal’s character looks a ‘caricature’ while Pran looked more realistic and convincing in the original.

Director who adopted a trend-setting narrative for “Dil Chahatha Hai” couldn’t live up to the standards neither in “Lakshya” nor in “Don”. He has definitely polished his technical skills but falls short in structuring his plots. If not for Shah Rukh Khan’s ‘charisma’ his latest flick would have bit the dust long back.
