Farzana is the latest Telugu film heroine import from Mumbai. Her ability to blend completely into the Telugu milieu was proved in her debut film Bhagyalakshmi Bumper Draw. Idlebrain.com met Farzana for a tete a tete. This is what she had to say.
I am a Parsi born and brought up in Mumbai. I have modelled for various brands like Hero Honda, Sansui TV, Godrej Hair Care, Big Bazaar etc.
I am also a professional choreographer and have done many stage shows. I choreographed the title song of Zindaa. I was the choreographer for Adnan Sami’s stage shows that went to nineteen cities all over the world.
I am also a nutrition expert and Reebok’s trainer. I am a keen sports buff and my expertise lies in adventurous sports like paragliding, rock climbing and bungee jumping. I am physically fit and am capable of doing stunt scenes myself.
When I came to Hyderabad to participate in a ramp show, the local press wrote about me and published a few photographs. Nidhi Prasad called me for an audition after seeing the photos. Seven days later, I landed the role.
What is the meaning of your name Farzana?
Farzana means wise.
What is the response to your debut film BLBD?
Absolutely amazing. Unbelievable. For the first time in my life, I wore half sarees and folk costumes and there was total acceptance from the audience.
What are you doing now?
I am doing the female lead in Seema Sastri.
Do you risk being typecast as a comedy heroine?
It is just a coincidence that my first two films are comedy films. I will make sure that I am not confined to any particular genre.
What kind of roles you are interested in doing?
I love do to roles done by Rani and Kajol in Black and Kuch Kuch Hota Hai respectively. Also those that Madhuri Dixit did. I also love Vijaya Shanti’s action films. If get an opportunity I would love to do a female oriented action film.
Are your parents supportive?
My parents are pretty much open-minded. They trust me and have given me a lot of freedom. On my part, I make sure that their trust in me is fully justified.
There was some amount of skin show in the songs of BLBD. Are you comfortable with that?
If the character demands a little bit of exposing, I won’t mind provided it is done aesthetically. However, I draw the line at vulgarity and vamp roles.
Would you do semi-nude scenes if done aesthetically in art films?
I don’t think I have graduated enough as an actress to do parallel cinema. However, if I reach that stage I may give it a thought.
What did you think of Telugu films before you joined this industry?
I watched Telugu films occasionally when I was channel surfing. I always felt that the films and characters were rather loud and sort of larger than life portrayals. I have a technical bent of mind so I do observe camera angles and other small details.
If you were to spend a day on a deserted island with a guy, whom would you opt for?
I am a great fan of Michael F, a famous tap dancer. I would love to spend a day with him to learn the tricks of the trade. He is extremely creative.
What are your future projects?
I am currently doing Seema Sastri. I have been getting many tempting offers (in terms of money) from Telugu film producers. I would prefer to do a few quality films than many insignificant films.
