Different Perspective - Mayabazar

What is Different Perspective?
We do have a tendency to get carried away by the success of a film and rarely look deep down into it to justify the ‘praises’ heaped on the film as well as on director. Should success blind our ‘thinking’ and shouldn’t we study its shortcomings as well. Agreed audience appreciation is all too important but will it not be a crime to overlook its flaws. This is just an attempt to pause for `moment’ and analyze the structuring of the `plot’ and how it would have been a notable effort if director had adhered to few rules of  Filmmaking grammar.

It’s a “Different Perspective’ of popular films by a “Friendly Viewer’.

Director Mohan Krishna who showed lot of promise in “Grahanam” fails to impress with his latest socio-fantasy due to an insipid plot and dreary narration. Also he shouldn’t have used the title of yesteryear Telugu classic for his not-so-impressive fare. Director’s disjoined screenplay clearly reflects his confusion since he couldn’t appropriately blend a love story with a fantasy element so neither it’s a convincing ‘romance’ nor an ‘engrossing fantasy’. It takes off as a tale of a self-piteous youth who wants to eradicate ‘hunger’ in society, a `wishful thinking’ even for successive governments; however we do laud his intent. Director tries to fuse a love story to it by making a celestial princess in human form (Boomika) to fall in love with the protagonist but he dislikes her more than anybody else in the world (until director orders him to approve). To fulfill a curse, Kubera, lord of fortune, has to serve the ‘righteous protagonist’ and eventually decides to take protagonist’s life unable to wash utensils and clothes (how ridiculous). Director falters in weaving these ‘three tracks’ convincingly so none of the ‘tracks” holds audience interest saving few jokes. Even the resolution of protagonist gearing up to sacrifice his life to keep up his ‘word’ fails to evoke sympathy since everything looks more contrived. What a disappointing film from a national award-winner?

Did the director wanted to show that human beings have more moral values than celestial gods? But Kubera doesn’t even scout around for few good people before zeroing on “protagonist’, a true humanist, to serve (sorry to wash clothes and utensils). Other than the protagonist, even director doesn’t etch out few more good souls to justify his argument since the film is packed with mostly selfish characters. Probably director wants corporates to shell out big money to help poor and needy (to support his argument he makes the protagonist to claim that he is spending 250 crores out of 500 crores turn over, a false claim which can be disputed even by a layman). He believes that only farmers are suffering overlooking poor in other sections of our society. By just removing ‘brokers’ numerous problems of farmers cannot be solved overnight and only a comprehensive policy addressing all their issues can bring relief to them but only over a period of time. Another flip-flop of director was making Kubera, a scrupulous soul, who is ready to even take the life of the protagonist to avoid `serving’ and invariably dilutes the fantasy angle and probably the novelty in the script (as director believed unfortunately) and supposed to evoke laughs. What really impressed the director in the ‘plot’ will remain a surprise forever?

Raja’s character is all goodness but few of his ideas are impractical and his mission to eradicate poverty by removing ‘brokers’ lacks vision. He blames God for all the problems in the world but says sorry to God when he gets money to save one-kid then has he ignored plenty of others who are suffering. He is idealistic without a systematic plan. He saves a deserted kid but hands over the reigns of his dream project in the hands of the same person displaying his immaturity. He is emotional than sensible and pragmatic. Probably he was under-prepared to handle a fortune.

The poorly-etched role for Boomika could go down as ‘one’ of the worst characters in her career. She seems to be determined to ruin her Telugu career. She falls in love with Raja besotted by his looks than for his deeds. She comes to know of his ideals one by one only after falling in love. Shamelessly she chases him even though he keeps snubbing her. Even her revelation as a celestial princess in the end, doesn’t add to any new charm. While SPB is a miscast and any other comedy actor with singer’s voice would have been better.
