Interview with Deva Katta
Date: April 15, 2010, Hyderabad
deva katta

Deva Katta who gave a runaway hit Vennela as his debut movie has director Prasthanam as his second venture. This film is all set to release on 16 April. Idlebrain.com caught up with Deva for a quick interview. Here are the excerpts -

1. What is Prasthanam movie all about?
People have different perspectives about moral law and human values. Prasthanam vividly expresses one of my perspective.

Prasthanam is a poetic and intense character drama with an authentic human interaction throughout the film. Though it has political ambiance, the movie is purely about human nature with an existential treatment and an explosive plot-line. The look and making of the movie is highly stylized with a broach structure that organically makes the movie a full-meal with for all kinds of audiences without A, B and C classifications.

2. How did you arrive at the casting?
Right after Vennela, I’ve approached Mahesh Babu with a political story (not Prasthanam story but was titled Prasthanam at that time). The subject dealt with a conflict between beauracracy and politics in the Indian system with cinematic proportions like ‘Oke Okkadu’, but Mahesh didn’t want to do any political subjects despite expressing that my story had a smart and entertaining package, more over he was doing ‘Sainikudu’ at that time (which had similar ambiance and their villain’s name clashed with mine, ‘pappu yadav’). That’s when I’ve started developing Prasthanam which had the political ambience only as a background, but completely focuses on the ultimate ‘system’ - ‘the human character’. The roots of the story have a very native family background which everyone can relate to and travels like a roller-coaster with genuine character motives from there on.

I’ve approached Gopi Chand and Ravi Theja this time who felt the story falls short of their kind of ‘heroism’ and asked me to come back with another story in their ‘format’. Then me and producer Ravi thought it’s waste of time going around big heroes where their image comes in the way of our creativity. (We totally understand their situation as well). Then we’ve scaled down some episodes and immediately fixed on Sharwanand whom I believe will one day be unanimously called ‘one of most wonderful actors’ that Telugu industry has seen (Prasthanam will be one of those proofs).

3. What do you think are the high points of Prasthanam?
The story, performances from each and every artist, Shamdat’s cinematography, Mahesh Shankar’s music and other technical values of the movie.

4. What is the reason behind doing a serious film like Prasthanam after doing a fun flick like Vennela?
I can’t call ‘Prasthanam’ a serious film, again my definition of ‘serious’ might be different than the average definition, but it’s an engaging, energetic and tempo based films with an unbiased character development at it’s stem.

5. How is the business status of the movie and how many prints it is releasing with?
We’ve gotten decent price for satellite, closed some areas with Non Refundable Advances and keeping most of the rights with us taking theater advances. The movie is very ambitious and none of us (myself, producer Ravi and for that matter every team member) couldn’t compromise on the look and feel, we ended spending about 3.7 crores for the copy. Yet the movie will look much larger in it’s scale and lot of that credit goes our executive producer Vijay Krishna, Associate Producer Vasu Vallabhaneni who took care of the entire execution part besides me.

We are release the film with a total of 60 prints (including 7 prints in USA).

6. Your future projects?
About movie projects, I’m currently developing a stylized action comedy which will be very energetic and effective with a big star. I would like to approach Bunny, Mahesh, NTR and Pawan Kalyan, see if any of them would be interested. If not, I would probably work it out within my limitations just like Prasthanam and keep getting better at my job.

I thank idlebrain for this opportunity, helps me reach my home crowd in US. Really didn’t want to miss this interview though we’re running around to make sure each and every print is safe without any last minute glitches.
