Different Perspective - Ranam

What is Different Perspective?
We do have a tendency to get carried away by the success of a film and rarely look deep down into it to justify the ‘praises’ heaped on the film as well as on director. Should success blind our ‘thinking’ and shouldn’t we study its shortcomings as well. Agreed audience appreciation is all too important but will it not be a crime to overlook its flaws. This is just an attempt to pause for `moment’ and analyze the structuring of the `plot’ and how it would have been a notable effort if director had adhered to few rules of  Filmmaking grammar.

It’s a “Different Perspective’ of popular films by a “Friendly Viewer’.

Director Amma Rajsekar with a bland film severely dented the reputation of revered Eetharam Films which carved a niche for itself with thought-provoking films like “Repati Porulu” and “Neti Bharatam (hope you will agree). Unfortunately, for the first time producer Baburao wouldn’t have savored the success like in the past since it was an `unlikely’ film from his path-breaking banner. Director’s clumsy fusion of love and action is clearly reflected in his incoherent screenplay which was packed with raunchy numbers and comedy than with actual content. It can neither be branded as a gripping action film nor as a touching love story. Except for his father’s mandatory caution, director fails to unearth even one good reason for the angry-young protagonist’s reluctance to take on a dreaded don in city. Instead, protagonist even allows a ‘killing’ under his nose and later plays stupid tricks to hoodwink the baddy before taking him on. On the other hand the ruthless baddy who believes ‘fear’ as his investment lets go the protagonist scot-free and doesn’t even chide his sister for falling in love with him.(does he encourage true love?). Coming to the love track, protagonist avoids heroine but all-of-sudden reciprocates. He claims that he is keeping her away since he doesn’t want to loose his `peace’ by fighting her brother then why does he indulge in brawls with the thugs of the same baddy? This contradiction is the basic blotch of this supposed action flick (doesn’t title suggest so).

Probably director felt that the protagonist taking on the baddy to save his love would have been ‘routine’ and opted for other silly reasons to trigger conflict between them. But ironically he returns to the same point towards the end by making his protagonist to fight for his love. The premise of an action film requires a strong reason to justify the anger of the protagonist to destroy evil or else the whole plot and action sequences look contrived. Though protagonist arrives in city to remain peaceful but doesn’t relish peace even for a moment and displays his true colors at first opportunity itself. When heroine asks him to avoid flirting with danger he replies “ee rowdy maata vinte maa nanna feel avadu”? So he has no reason for suppressing his `anger’ but still plays hide-and-seek with baddy before the final showdown. Protagonist urges people to be frank about their ‘love’ but in his case he cheaply asks the heroine to trap another guy as a proof of her love instead of rejecting her proposal instantly (Since the pain of being fooled will cause more pain than declined love). Director hasn’t realized that both love and hatred need enough time for a re-think and just cannot happen overnight like in the case of our protagonists.

Protagonist‘s role is inconsistent. He arrives in city to concentrate on studies and avoid unnecessary brawls. He even allows a murder under his nose but bashes up goons in college for wrongly beating him up. He even disturbs the privacy of a thug to seek apology but reluctant to accept the love of a girl since she is the sibling of a don. Making his quest for ‘peace’ conceited than credible.

Heroine, a modern day girl, even goes to extent of trapping another guy to prove his love for the protagonist. How childish? She is shocked to know that he has actually ‘fooled’ her but still reciprocates even without seeking a persuasive reply for his offensive plan.
