Interview with Sundeep Kishan
Date: Junly 15, 2010, Hyderabad
sundeep kishan

He was struggling to get an opportunity a couple of years back and today he is acting as male lead in three different languages. His raw portrayal of psychotic character Chinna in his debut movie Prasthanam brought him great appreciation from critics and movie lovers alike. Know more about the new actor Sundeep Kishan brimming with confidence in this exclusive interview -

Background:
I am a Telugu guy who is born and brought up in Madras. It’s been my dream to become a hero since my childhood. I tried my luck for a few years and understood that I need a different route to become an actor. I joined Gowtam Menon in direction department for Surya s/o Krishnan movie. I saw the casting call of Sneha Geetam in idlebrain.com and went for auditions.

I got selected to play Arjun role in Sneha Geetam movie. During the shooting of Sneha Geetam, Deva Katta cast me for Chinna role in Prasthanam movie. I got a chance to act in the Hindi film Shor though Deva Katta. Directors Raj and DK saw rushes of Prasthanam and selected for one of the three heroes in Shor. I share the screen with Tushar Kapoor and Sendhil Ramamurthy (It’s a wonderful afterlife). This film is being produced by Ekta Kapoor. I am also doing a Tamil flick titled ‘2020’ in Satyajyothy banner (producers of Basha and Mouna Ragam). It is being directed by Chetan.

How did the stint of assistant director help you?
I think working in direction department gives you more experience than going to an acting school. It gives us complete understanding of how the movie is made and how an actor should work.

Any plans to direct in the future?
No. I used assistant direction as a route to become an actor. Direction is not my cup of tea and I want to be an actor.

I primarily want to be an actor because you will get to know much more about life through acting. Actors end up playing wide range of characters spanning across different age groups. It feels nice when others recognize you and remember you. I feel that acting is the best way to achieve it.

Tell us about your character in Sneha Geetam?
I am doing the role of Arjun who has a boy-next-door image. He is a fan of Ram Gopal Varma and he wants to become a director. It is a character that everybody relates to. This character is very similar to my character in real life.

Sneha Geetam is a sweet and simple film that tells the story of three guys with different attitudes and backgrounds. It mirrors the college life we had gone through in our real life.

What is the feedback you got about Prasthanam?
It was a wonderful experience. Deva Katta is a brilliant director to work with. Chinna role is the one which any young actor would love to do. I got rave appreciation for the character.

Tell us about Shor?
Shor is my biggest break yet. Raj and DK are brilliance personified. I have completely different look, body language and performance compared to Prasthanam and Sneha Geetam.

You were struggling to get opportunity at one point of time and now you are working it three languages. How does it feel?
It’s pure luck. Different language has a different set of audiences and different cultures. It is fun to do movies in different languages with varied range of tastes.

Who do you like among the actors? What are your favourite movies?
Rajnikant, Ravi Teja and Shahrukh Khan. I am a huge fan of Rajnikant since childhood. I used to ape him during my childhood.

My favourite movies are Arya, Idiot, Minnale and Kakha Kakha.

How many years did you struggle become becoming an actor?
5 years. For the first three years, I got trained in acting, fights and dances. Then I realised that it’s not going to help and joined Gowtam Menon. After 1 and half years of working in direction department, I got a break with Sneha Geetam.

Chota K Naidu is your uncle. Does it help you in getting any of the offers?
No. The technicians are going to render you their good will. But we get opportunities on our own talent. Chota Uncle gave me huge moral support.
