Dev (Karthikeya) robs a bank and kill his gang (5 members) to take away all the money. One woman from each of deceased members gang up and meet a revenge fiction writer Pardhasaradhi (Nani) for help. Though not interested in the beginning, he is compelled to help them. Rest of the story is all about how he traces down the culprit and avenge him for the gang.
Actors: It’s a cakewalk for Nani. It’s a character of a good hearted boy next door. Nani has generated excellent situational-based humor. Karthikeya is alright in a negative role. Lakshmi is very impressive as a granny who gathers the group of lady avengers. She provides humor and emotion equally well. Saranya fits the bill. Priyaka Arul Mohan is beautiful and did her part well. The girl who donned the role of mute is cute. Priyadarshi is natural as a publisher-friend of the hero. Vennela Kishore is hilarious again in an unusual role. Satya is good in a limited role of a stammering driver.
Story - screenplay - direction: It’s a revenge story told in an entertaining way. The characterization of Pardha Saradhi and five women is good. The character of villain is not smoothly integrated into the plot of this genre. Vikram K Kumar who is known to tell complex stories with an engaging screenplay has tried to narrate linearly with Gang Leader. He has also added a few mild surprise twists at regular intervals. The entire thread related to villain (the initial robbery, showing how villain became a racer and his attempts to get hold of hero’s gang) are not shown in an impressive way. However, the introduction of the hero and women gang, their travel and bonding they develop in the travel are shown well. Screenplay of the film is smooth. There are a few minor issues in the second half towards climax. When the villain is introduced as a racer of international repute, the racing sequence should be grand. They have just shown just one F1 racing car in the entire stretch of race. Vikram’s ability to handle humor and sentimental scenes offsets the disappointment caused by villain characterization.
Other departments: Music by Anirudh is very good. Hoyna Hoyna and Ra Ra are well shot on the screen. Background music is effective. Cinematography by Miroslaw Kuba Brozek is nice. Dialogues are well written. Action sequences are alright, but should have been more stylish/sophisticated for a film of this genre. Production design is good (especially the house set). Production values are good. 
Analysis: Gang Leader is a revenge plot narrated with humor and emotions. It’s a straight-narrated film with a few mild twists. Plus points are Nani, actresses, humor and screenplay. On the flipside, the villain characterization should have been more impact-making. On a whole, Gang Leader is a simple film with healthy humor and smooth screenplay. You may watch it if you excuse a few minor hiccups.
