Review

Story
Sanju (Sundeep Kishan) visits his relatives in Yanam. He falls in love with Lavanya (Lavanya Tripathi) who is a hockey player and studies in the college. There is a ground in that college which is widely used to train hockey players. It has a history that dates back to the independence era where players from Yanam have won tournaments at international level. Sports minister Rao Ramesh (Rao Ramesh) makes a secret deal with a corporate company to lease the ground. He needs to make the ground an under-performing one in order to make it qualify for the lease. Rest of the story is all about how Sanju makes sure that ground stays with the college.

Artists Performance

Sundeep Kishan has gone through a physical transformation to get a chiseled body. He has also grown a beard in some of the scenes. He looks pretty different in this film in terms of looks. He is completely at ease playing the character. There are emotional scenes in the second half and in flashback and he is very convincing. Lavanya Tripathi does well in an important role. There are a couple of intimate scenes as well. Rao Ramesh is very good with his signature villainy. Murali Sharma is apt for the role of a passionate coach. Raghu Babu is seen in a crucial role. Satya is good. Mahesh Vitta provides some relief. Priyadarsi and Rahul Ramakrishna play important roles and both are very good.

Technical departments

Story - screenplay - direction: This film is an official remake of Tamil hit film ‘Natpe Thunai’. Story of the film is very good. It has a lot of emotional value to it. Screenplay of the film is nice with right interval-block and a relevant flashback episode. Direction of the film is partly good. The director has succeeded in getting the emotions right for the interval block with the help of good writing and music. However, he couldn't succeed in getting the emotions right in the climax. The climax and pre-climax episodes don't get the attention of audiences.

Other departments: Music composed by HipHop Tamizha is good. He has packed a lot of emotion in pre-interval song. The visuals/colors/DI look different in this film. Personally, cinematography looked off for me. But, that's a conscious decision taken by the team to have such kind of visuals. Production design of the film is decent. Editing by Chota K Prasad is alright. Fights are realistic. Production values of the film are good.

Analysis: A1 Express is an official remake of Tamil film Natpe Thunai. The basic story of corporate greed vs a coach and his players fighting to their hockey ground is David vs Goliath type of theme which has a great potential. With the story, screenplay and music in place, the director has to work out on bringing the soul and emotions of the original. He has handled the first half well with an effective interval block. However, the climax and pre-climax scenes were not handled effectively, It’s a great makeover for Sundeep Kishan and you can see the efforts he put into this team. On the whole, A1 Express is a mixed bag with certain good aspects and some mediocre stuff. An emotional climax and a good second half would have done wonders for the film.
