Smita’s latest album Smita is doing good business with encouraging sales. This album is being in 4th position in the top 10 countdown. Sony is promoting the album aggressively. The second video (Aaja Nachle) of this album was launched recently. Idlebrain.com caught up with Smita for a brief chitchat -

Tell us about your second music video of latest album Smita?
Smita album has been the most awaited one for me as well as for the music lovers. The first video song Mahi Ve was shot in a huge set with lots of pomp. the second video song Aaja nachle is concentrated more on me. In my opinion, Aaja Nachle is the best music video ever shot on me.

Are you getting any film offers these days?
I was never interested in big screen. That is the main reason why I stayed away from Tollywood. After the success of Kalakkal album, I had been getting many Tamil offers as well. But my focus has always been on singing and performing on the stage.

What is the USP of Smita album?
Smita album is one of the highest budgeted albums ever made in India. It includes top notch technicians.

Why did you name the album on yourself?
The songs in this album belong to various genres like Punjabi, Rajastani, Western, Arabic etc. Hence it was a difficult to categorize it to one genre and title the album. Hence we decided to name it as Smita.

Did you face any bias against South Indian singers in Bollywood?
When I made my first album Hai Rabba, there was some bias against south Indian technicians in Mumbai. But the things have changed a lot since then. Lots of south Indian talents are (AR Rehman, Ram Gopal Varma, Priya Darshan and Mani Ratnam to name a few) ruling the Bollywood now. Hence, the respectability towards south Indian technicians increased a lot. I was very comfortable while making Smita album. The best thing about it was that nobody felt any south Indian accent in my Hindi rendering.

Who are your favorite female singers in India?
Among the female playback singers, Asha Bhonsle is my all-time favorite. We did not have many stage performers in India so far. I like the work of Sunita Rao on the stage. I want to rise to international standards as the present state of stage performance industry in India is not good enough.

The night life in Hyderabad has grown phenomenally in the recent years and music is the main ingredient along with the liquor in night life. How is your work contributing to it?
It is true that the pub culture is flourishing in Hyderabad. But mostly Hindi and English songs are being played. I wish that the DJs should also play selected good Telugu numbers as well.

How is the market for your songs in Tamil?
Kalakkal album was an experiment in Tamil. And it was received very well. I realized the magnitude of that album’s success when I participated in live TV talk shows in Tamil. It is a big achievement to be successful in Tamil though I am a Telulu girl. The best compliment I got from there was that I am an Indian J Lo.

How are the sales of your earlier albums?
Two of my earlier albums were sold for over a million copies each and I am expecting Smita album too cross that magic figure.

What are your future projects?
I started a production house with the name ‘I Candy Entertainments’. I am going to produce a dance show called ‘Dance with me’. We are also promising the winners a career as we hire the winners and provide them with work. I am having a tie up with Bollywood choreographers like Bosco Caesar. This dance show will be aired in one of the most popular TV channel in Telugu. Employment opportunity and career guidance is what separates Dance with me from other dance shows that are being held just for the sake of fun.
