Kaala (Rajinikanth) is the gangster of Dharavi sulm area in Mumbai. Hari Dada (Nana Patekar) is a powerful politician who comes up with Pure Mumbai project and intends to remove Dharavi slum and relocate people. Kaala obstructs it and Hari Dada tries again and again. Rest of the story is all about how Kaala finally puts an end to Hari Dada and makes sure that Dharavi is safe for it’s dwellers.
Actors: Rajinikanth makes sure that his magnetic presence works well in the film. He is ferocious as the man who fights for his people. He is also extremely good in romantic camaraderie with wife. Nana Patekar is perfect as the dreadful politician and is a match for Rajinikanth with his subtle yet powerful body language. Eeswari Rao steals the show as wife of Rajinikanth. She provides some entertainment. Huma Qureshi plays the role of hero’s ex-flame and a social worker. Samudirakhani is good as lieutenant of Kaala. Other actors are cast in a realistic manner.
Technical departments
Other departments: Cinematography of the film is good. There is a darker tone to the film throughout. I liked the aesthetics in climax (when villain comes to Dharavi) where color is used very creatively. Music is the lifeline of the film. I loved Chittemma song. Background action score which is dominated by guitar is good. Dialogues are okay. Sets of Dharavi are realistic. Production values by Wunderbar Films and Lyca Productions are grand.
