Review

Story
Bhumi (Ritu Varma) is an independent and principled entrepreneur in Hyderabad. Her mother (Nadhiya) wants Bhumi to get married and Bhumi is averse to the idea. Akash (Naga Shaurya) is a successful architect abroad and returns to India for a short trip. Both knew each other well before. They are brought back together as Bhumi’s investor ropes in Akash to design a sustainable building for Bhumi’s firm. Though Bhumi is indifferent towards him, Akash starts to like her. She develops a soft-corner towards him in due time. Rest of the story is all about what happens when one of them tries to express his/her love.

Artists Performance

Naga Shaurya is handsome and classy as the guy who finds love. He is effortless. It’s an author-backed role for Ritu Varma and she carries her role beautifully with class. Nadhiya is good as a mother who keeps worrying about her daughter's marriage. Murali Sharma has few dialogues and whenever he speaks it makes sense. Vennela Kishore is neat and only appears in the first half. Himaja is fine as a reels-addicted girl. Saptagiri provides entertainment in a brief role of an impatient guy (well written scenes for a comedy filler). All other actors like Jayaprakash, Praveen, Arjun Kalyan, Harsha Vardhan, Vaishnavi Chaitanya, Kireeti Dammaraju etc have done their job well.

Technical departments

Story - screenplay - direction: The basic story by the debutant director Lakshmi Sowjanya is wafer-thin. It’s a story that should run on an interesting screenplay and emotions. She has written a strong character for the heroine role in the first half. Only in the flashback, we do realise that the entire story is about confusion among the main leads. The interval conversation made me wonder how they are going to extend the story into the second half. Only to realise that the heroine has the habit of taking hasty decisions and follows them religiously. That could be the reason why we didn’t feel anxious to see the couple get united (the heroine rejects him when everything looks good at the interval point). Director comes up with a decent work, however we do expect a better conflict point for the second half. Narration of the film is slow. Screenplay should have been better.

Other departments: Cinematography by Vamsi Patchipulusu is good. He gave the film a proper rom-com look. Music by Vishal Chandra Sekhar is neat. Dialogues penned by Ganesh Ravuri are good. Editing by Naveen Nooli is fine. Production design by AS Prakash complements the genre of the film. Production values by Sithara Entertainments banner are good.

Analysis: Varudu Kavalenu is about the heroine's mother's quest to find a suitable groom for her daughter. Debutant director Lakshmi Sopwjanya creates a mood for the film and followed it consistently throughout except for an occasional comedy cameo. The characterisations are good. On the flipside, the conflict in the second half should have been stronger and the pace of the film (in Saptagiri’s terms ‘lag’) is very slow. On the whole, Varudu Kaavalenu is a simple romantic drama.
