Story
Mahesh (Mahesh Babu) becomes orphan when he was a kid after his parents commit suicide for failing to pay EMIs for a loan. Mahesh makes his way to the USA and starts a micro-finance company in Miami. He is very strict about money and doesn’t leave a penny out. A spoilt brat Kalavathi (Keerthy Suresh) is a regular at Hardrock Casino in Miami and splurges money over there. She keeps lending money from loan sharks. To get away from it, she acts as a studious/innocent girl to get a loan of $10,000 from Mahesh. He falls in love with her and keeps giving her money only to realize later that she is cheating him. He demands money back, but she says no. Then, he visits Vizag where her father is a huge business magnet. Rest of the story is all about how he collects the money owed to him and much more.
Artists Performance
Mahesh Babu: It's been a while since Mahesh Babu did a masala film. He has been trying to do message oriented films since Srimanthudu as it worked for him. His last such full-length message oriented film was Maharshi. He has added entertainment in Sarileru Neekevvaru and it became a blockbuster. In SVP, has added some more ingredients which his fans have been missing for years. He is completely energetic in the film. For the past half a decade, he has been doing roles which require subtleness. This film has a hyper-active Mahesh Babu in the first half. He has changed his modulation in a few scenes. Mahesh will be liked by everybody in this film because he has put in conscious effort to make a difference. He is very energetic in songs too, especially Kalavathi. Though he said there are no message in SVP, this film is another message oriented film. Hopefully, SVP is his last message oriented film in the next few years.
Others: It’s an entertaining role for Keerthi Suresh which she has done with a lot of flair. It’s a kind of difficult role for any heroine as she makes a fool out of the hero in the first half. It needs a heroine with some stature to do this character. This role is a cakewalk for Samuthirakani. Vennela Kishore is highly entertaining in the love episode scenes in the first half. His sophistication has matched that of Mahesh Babu to get the comedy right. Nadhia is good in a limited, yet important role. Brahmaji is very effective in a vital episode of the film. Tanikella Bharani gets a sympathetic role and does it excellently. Subbaraju is good. Ravi Prakash is good as a sincere bank employee. Nagababu and Posani Krishna Murali are fine.
Technical departments
Story - screenplay - direction: The core subject of the film is about the banking system. It’s a universal topic and every one of us takes loans from the banks and pays EMIs. Parasuram is mostly known for writing entertaining dialogues and different hero characterization. Most of Parasuram films are about generalizations. It’s a risky task for him to attempt such a universal social issue on a big canvas. Director Shankar takes up subjects like these. Parasuram excelled in the entertainment aspect of the film. The love story in the first half is well handled. We had seen innumerable films of heroines drooling over Mahesh Babu and he treating them like nobody in the past. First the first time, we see a heroine doing bakra out of Mahesh Babu. This angle is unique and it works. Parasuram is also known for writing good hero characterization and creating nice mannerisms like Puri Jagan. Parasuram has also succeeded in showing Mahesh Babu in a new light in SVP. Though the main subject is a powerful one, Parasuram falters in executing it without flaws. Banking and finances are subjects that need a deep understanding of economics. He has generalized it. Though it might appeal to masses, some scenes in the second half look logicless. A couple of emotional scenes in the 2nd half are handled well (getting notice from the bank and explaining how banks rob common people). Villain character looks more stupid than villianous. He has connected the last scene well to make the whole second half look justified/relevant.
Other departments: Two songs (Kalavathi & Ma Ma Mahesha) scored by Thaman are chartbusters and are a treat to watch on the screen. He has set his reputation for background music so high that his work in this movie appears a little underwhelming. Cinematography by R Madhi is very good. The color grading for the film is bright. Only exception is the Ma Ma Mahesha song where all colors are presented in this song to the fullest. The Dialogue written by Parasuram is good. There should have been more emotion added to the action sequences. Editing by Marthand K Venkatesh is fine. Production design is okay. Production values by Mythri banner are grand.
Analysis: The first half of the film is entertaining with a twist at the interval. The second half dwells into the core story of the film. It’s about how the banking industry failed in loans and NPA section. Such a subject needs a lot of depth. Director Parasuram chooses to generalize it so that basic idea can be conveyed easily to the masses. Plus points are an energetic Mahesh Babu, love story, core story idea and emotional scenes in the 2nd half. On the flipside, the second half should have been handled convincingly. On the whole, Sarkaru Vaari Paata is a film that works on Mahesh Babu’s charisma and the core identifiable story idea.
