Review

Story
Vennela (Sai Pallavi) is the daughter of a folklore singer (Sai Chand). She is fond of the Srikrishna - Meera Bai tale. She falls in love with a naxalite Ravanna (Rana Daggubati) after reading his books on maoism. Inspired by Krishna - Meera Bai tale, she decides to find Ravanna and propose to him. She runs away from her house and keeps searching to get a contact to join Ravanna. Rest of the story is all about what happens when he finally meets Ravanna.

Artists Performance

Sai Pallavi has that innocence and free-spiritedness in-built in her face and body language. She is excellent as Vennela who is so pure in her love. She has 80% of the screen space in this film, yet you feel like watching her performance throughout. Rana Daggubati is known for his solid dialogue delivery and fiery screen presence. He used both these qualities to the fullest while portraying the role of Ravanna. Nanditha Das played the role of a human rights activist. She is very good. Nivetha Pethuraj did a tiny cameo. Priyamani, Naveen Chandra and Bindu Chandramouli did important roles as comrades and they justified. Eeswari Rao and Sai Chand are fine. Rahul Ramakrishna is terrific in the police station scene. Benerjee has done quite a few naxalite characters in the past, the director has cast him as a cunning cop and Benerjee excelled in it. Zareen Wahab is good as the hero's mother. Jagadeesh Prathap Bandari (friend character in Pushpa) has done a super job in the film as I haven’t noticed him. All actors are natural choices in this film.

Technical departments

Story - screenplay - direction: The story of this film is a fictional account of an incident involving comrade Sarala in the 90's. Director Venu Udugula whose debut film Needhi Naadhi Oke Katha deals with the relevant portrayal of a son who tells his father that one doesn’t have to be an achiever in studies to be a good son, comes up with a subject that belongs to the 90's. Venu is a good writer which is reflected in dialogues and his writing depth is seen in certain scenes. He has maintained character consistency for all the characters throughout. Screenplay-wise too, the way cops and Vennela episodes juxtaposed is good. I liked the way the director explained the concept of Virata Parvam through a character in the 2nd second half. You can see sincerity and honesty in Venu’s work. However, by being true to the subject, he has reduced the reachability of the film.

Other departments: Music scored by Suresh Bebbili deserves a special appreciation. Songs and background music are good. Cinematography by Dani Sanchez-Lopez & Divakar Mani is excellent. Editing by Sreekar Prasad is fine. Dialogues written by Venu Udugula are heart touching and thought-provoking (especially the ones written for Sai Pallavi character). Production design by Sri Nagendra is very good and natural. Action sequences composed by Stephen Richard, Peter Hein are realistic and good. Re-recording and digital intermediate (color grading) are good. Production values are decent.

Analysis: Virata Parvam is a film that's true to its story, characters and genre. Producers deserve an appreciation for bankrolling such a film. Actor Rana should be commended for letting Sai Pallavi take the center stage. Venu Udugula took this opportunity to pen a fictitious story based on a real incident and narrated it with utmost conviction. Certain parts of the film are not engaging. We often wonder why the entire first half is dedicated to the journey of Vennela finding Ravanna. Despite some hiccups, Virata Parvam is an honest film backed by good writing and terrific performances. The reach may be limited (millennials are not aware of naxal movement), but if you are inclined to watch artistic films with author-backed roles, this is the one for you.
