Review

Story
Bala (Ganesh) is a good-hearted youngster who works in a govt office in a town. He comes from a conservative family. Bhagyalakshmi (Varsha Bollamma) lives in the same town. Parents arrange matchmaking for them. Both like each other, but Bhagya Lakshmi doesn't like the attitude of Bala’s parents. They date each other and are about to get married. That’s when a secret is revealed. Bala donates his sperm and the surrogate mother gets back to his life along with a baby. Rest of the story is about the confusions that arise.

Artists Performance

Ganesh is alright for a debutant. This is a one-dimensional role and he fits in well. Varsha Bollamma is good as a leading lady. Rao Ramesh excels as a frustrated and highly conservative father. Ramana Goparaju (middle class melodies fame) is hilarious. You always find one such guy in all weddings. Subbaraju is good as a late bachelor who is jealous of the hero’s lady luck. Vennela Kishore is good as a RMP doctor. Harshavardhan plays a vital role as a doctor. Divya Sripada is very good in an important role. Pragathi, Sunaina, Surekha Vani, Sivannarayana and others have performed well.

Technical departments

Story - screenplay - direction: There is a novel point in the story. And comedy is generated out of it in the second half. The love thread in the film is average. The screenplay should have been better (as the moment the hero tells the real problem to family/heroine, the conflict gets over). He tells the truth only towards the end. Scenes including Rao Ramesh and Ramesh Goparaju are written very well and the actors add to it with their terrific timing. Ramesh Goparaju’s gold necklace thread is the highlight of the film. Movie starts off on a slow note and picks up momentum as the conflict point is revealed towards the interval. Second half offers good laughs. However, the director/writer should have worked more on why the hero took so much time to reveal the truth as the hell breaks loose right from the interval.

Other departments: Music by Mahathi Swara Sagar is okay. Cinematography by Suryaa is decent. The dialogues are good. Editing is fine. Art direction by Avinadh Kolla is authentic. Production values by Sithara Entertainments and Fortune Four banners are decent.

Analysis: Swathimuthyam deals with a novel conflict point (sperm donation is used in Vicky Donor and surrogacy is used in Mimi, both these concepts weren’t explored in a straight mainstream Telugu cinema though Vicky Donor was remade). There is ample entertainment in the 2nd half that arises between Rao Ramesh and Ramana Goparaju characters. The best thing about the film is that the makers didn’t try to fit it into a regular format and tried to get to the point with a crisp runtime of 2 hours. However, the writing should have been more convincing (love thread and why the hero took so much time to reveal the truth). On the whole, despite non-so engaging writing, comedy works in the 2nd second half.
